Battery conditioner for over winter.

I didn't know where to post this so thought here was as good as anywhere as the advice given will probably be uselful across a range of vehicles.

A friend of mine has an MGF, which he keeps garaged and uses on nice days only.
This will be it's first winter in his ownership and he's looking for advice regarding keeping his battery in tip-top condition, without the need to run the engine every week.

I'm looking for opinions on which battery charger will best suit his needs please and would he need to keep his car constantly plugged in to maintain the battery efficiency?

Cheers in advance. Thumbs Up

Go for a CTEK. Plenty of advice on here, they are ideal.

Lidl are doing one at the moment that will suit his needs for £15.00 and it has the same features as the £100.00 plus CTeks.

Flack Thumbs Up

No doubt some will...

disagree...but
I was told years ago that a normal lead acid battery that isnt in use (i.e. subjected to regular discharge & charging routines) was best kept dormant in a charged condition.
The next criteria was it had to be kept away from frost....

The optimum Lead Acid Battery cycles are:
- no overdischarging (running the battery right down to empty)
- no opportunity charging (a quick boost charge then back into use)
- ensure that battery topped with distilled (at least de-mineralised, clean water...if it isnt sealed)
- Allow the battery to be recharged from where it is to full....then allow a period for the battery to "sit" - no further charging or discharging.
- Measure the amount of charge between each cell with a hydrometer...with this you can see weak cells, those that wont hold a charge.

Sadly all the above cant relly be done with the Standard LR disco Battery..maybe someone will explain the chemistry in these...whatever it is - it isnt any better than a good quality standard Lead Acid
 BREXIT - done properly.
Right now ...We need Government - not Politics
Save the Dipstick Flagbearer-keep it simple, less likely to fail campaign-agenda items:Starting Handles, Acetylene Lamps.
Founder: Dipsticks-R-Us Inc
D3 HSE-perfectly formed, passenger friendly...has real DIPSTICK
Jag XK-but sadly no DIPSTICK...HUGE design fault
FL2 has DIPSTICK..."real comfort in rear seats"
VW Golf wondermobile (?)..has real DIPSTICK
Morris Minor..original DIPSTICK technology..and a real KEY.

Norway

The Ctek's have a dedicated winter program, if you shop around you can find them cheaper, not as cheap as £15 Lidl chargers though.

Charging technology has come on leaps and bounds in the last 10 years.

Glad this question popped up as i have a related one.
If I buy a car in the uk to use when I pop over (prob a d4 but new ffrr a poss) will the car electronics fade and die if I remove the battery totally for months maybe 11 at a time?

A bit worried about fire risk leaving it alone charging months on end.
It is better to have and not need it then need and not have it.
