new to CB - questions....

Hi

Planning to get a Midland Alan 42 handheld - as well as an sirtel santiago 200cm antenna

Where did you mount the antenna - roof rack/bumper (steel)
Does one really need the antenna?

Has anyone got pics of wiring / mount

Appreciate answers

Ideally the antenna should be in the centre of the highest point, ie; the roof.

In reality it depends on what you're planning on using the CB for....

If you want long range then an ideal mounting is going to help, if you are only using short range (eg; off-roading convoys) then you could use the handheld antenna & not use a car antenna at all.

RLD does a mount that goes onto the roof rails with no cutting, drilling or anything, totally recommended for not a lot of money, see my gallery, there should be a few piccies

Hi DcN

I have a Midland 42 setup - as I only use it occasionally it is designed to be easily demountable.

The cb unit is mounted on a Brodit mount to the left of the stereo, powered from a 12v plug. The aerial mount is permanently mounted on the roof as in the picture. The cable comes through the door seal, down the B pillar, under the passenger seat and sits waiting until it needs connecting up. The whip antenna is screwed in when required. This steup allows all the stealable bits to be removed from the car quickyl and easily.

The aerial mount is an RLD mount as in the shop. One issue is the amount the mount raises above the roof line. If you look closely at the pic you will see the bottom of the antenna fitting is resting on the roof. I have had to put foam underneath to stop it scratching/denting the roof. A shallower antenna base would also solve the problem.

What I will say is as per advice above, a central position like this is far superior to mounting at one end. On trips in the mountains my 42 was achieving 2-3x the range of others, and I could hear them long after they stopped hearing me. We came to the view that a central position (along the length of the vehicles) was the key factor, as all had bigger permanently mounted CB units, but all had aerials mounted at the rear of the cars. Being central from left to right (i.e. laterally) isn't a major factor

Thanks for your answers!

as I understand it the mount will go directly into the original rails..
having my FR rack mounted all the time with its own rails I dont see a way to mount it like that..

but may be directly on the roof rack?

Has anyone done it like that?

Have a look at thunderpole and 4x4cb.com and have a look at their range of mounts, you should find something suitable to fit on the roof rack Thumbs Up

Agreed, both excellent suppliers. If you need a bespoke package I think either will give you a good deal. Thumbs Up
