Tramlining

My 05 car tramlines badly in the lorry ruts on the nearside lane of motorways, it is really unpleasant. I have had the front lower wishbones replaced (should have done it myself) and a 4 wheel alignment, camber and track but not castor.
I wonder if the problem is tyres as I have Goodyear Wrangler on the front and cheepo Nexes on the rear (like this when I bought it) Tyre size 255-60-18.
I have just changed from a 38A to D3 and am disappointed in the similarity of this wandering behavior.
I have not read that this is a D3 trait so I assume I have a problem, any suggestions
Thanks.

D3's are known to do this as they have large wide tyres, however the cases I have heard of are always when the tyres are getting low (tread depth) and getting close to needing replacing. I have suffered it when I had a set of Pirellies on that were down to 3mm. Changed the yres for new ones and issue went away.

How many miles has your D3 got, and have you changed any other bushes (anti roll bar or rear upper)?

GY W tyres down at 3mm or so will give you the feeling of driving on ice - I had exactly the same. Changed the tyres, new bushes all round (front , rear and RB). Still does it a bit but that is probably the Kumho's I have on.

Will be putting some GG AT2's on soon so will be able to confirm the effects.

Thumbs Up

Same problem both in a freelander and D3 with worn tyres. Changed tyres and it went away

It's worth checking your tyre pressures, and adjusting them, within reason, to see whether this helps.

IMHO follow maplecottage's example & fit a set of GG AT2s - get a quote from site sponsor AJS.

Had similar to what you describe, and I think it was multitude of worn bits.

Replaced front and rear wishbones which made a big difference.

Front tyres replaced and finally replaced the Tie rods and ball joints.

This made the biggest difference.

Hope this helps!

David.

United Kingdom 2009 Discovery 3 TDV6 Commercial Auto Java BlackDiscovery 3

ni46,

Glad you brought this up coz I've not seen anyone mention it on here although I've not been actively searching. Thought it was just me!

I have found the same with our Disco 3 Commercial ever since new. Can be scarry when towing a loaded16ft trailer when you least expect it!!
The steering goes light and soon changes direction.

To be honest this is my biggest gripe with the D3.
Our Isuzu Rodeo is significantly better in this respect (narrower tyres and longer wheelbase).

Remember when we first started looking for a D3 Commercial, Nene Overland stated that it was very stable in tramlines. In my experience it couldn't be further from the truth.

Not seen tread depth make any difference.

If you think about it it will happen regardless of tyre size, condition or indeed other parts wear .... the ruts we all have to navigate on our roads ,particularly motorways ,vary yes but they present the vehicle with an undulating ridged surface which a rolling area (the tyre) is not fully in contact with. Add in the speed you are travelling over them , maybe not parallel rut to tyre then instability will occur-if you are changing lanes then its inevitable if crossing over ruts..

I have had several "interesting" tramline moments when running on 20" tyres on the D3 but also experienced it on 17" GYR,17" Cooper ST's, 18" GYR, 19" Pirelli Scorpions & 20" General Grabbers all in varying degrees of instability.

I have to say though that currently on 18" GG AT2 and have not had it , additionally can't recall it happening on 20" Cooper Zeon LTZ Confused

Bottom line is that I do not believe you can drive a D3 without experiencing this .......

When i bought my D3 it had new tyres on and was excellent on tramlines, however it soon started as it fethered off the inside edge of the front tyres, i got it aligned and its been perfect for 3 years now. So i would say poor alignment and or worn bushes etc are the main causes.

Mmm...interesting read..have had the same issues the last couple of months, checked the pressures on my MTRs and thy were a bit on the low side, put some air in to the correct pressures and it has seemed to improve the "tramlining" effect. It will be interesting to see what I experience with the 20" LTZs I have just had put on this morning Thumbs Up

My tyres are on their last legs, and I have noticed a recent marked deterioration in straight-line stability, and a tendency to "wander" when going over road imperfections.
I also noticed a more pronounced tramlining when the last set were well passed their best, which disappeared when the new ones were put on.....
I have had new tie-rod ends in the last year, and although I got an advisory of some play in the n/s/f ball joint,I am convinced when the tyres get well-worn they are primarily responsible for the effects you are experiencing.
