http://www.landrover.com/gb/en/Vehicles/Di...ngines.htm
The above link shows the various weights of D3's
I know what kerb weight means (inc. fluids, spare wheel 75 kg driver etc.).
Can someone please explain what gross vehicle weight means. It's a much higher figure than the kerb weights.

Quote:Unladen weight
The unladen weight of any vehicle is the vehicles own weight when not carrying any goods or burden. This is:
inclusive of the body and all parts which are necessary to or ordinarily used with the vehicle or trailer when working on a road
exclusive of water, fuel or accumulators used for the purpose of the supply of power for the propulsion of the vehicle
Maximum authorised mass
The term maximum authorised mass (MAM), which is also known as gross weight and permissible maximum weight, is the maximum weight of the vehicle that may be used on the road including the maximum load the vehicle may safely carry. This is normally shown on a plate fitted to the vehicle.
If a vehicle is unlikely to be used at its potential maximum weight most vehicles may be downplated, i.e. the vehicles springs or other components can be changed, so that only a lighter load can be carried. The maximum authorised mass or gross weight is a factor in determining what driving entitlement is required.
Plated weight
The maximum authorised mass should be shown on the departments manufacturing plate fitted to the vehicle. This means the marking on a goods vehicle, by means of a ministry plate, showing the maximum weights for that particular vehicle eg maximum authorised mass, and in certain cases, train weight.
Train weight
Train weight is the combined MAM of the vehicle and the trailer it is pulling. 21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021

Thanks. So does that mean that you shouldn't exceed that weight ?
I carried about 1 ton of Bath stone, along with my own 115kg, plus a slightly lighter passenger the other week. Only about a 7 mile journey, but it felt fine. Passenger commented on how good the suspension was!
Surel 7 big people would it over the GVW.

Ok Ok
Your D3 Kerb weight is around 2718kg ..the GVW is 3230kg...that leaves 512kg...you are 115kg...lets say your passenger is 80kgs that leaves 317kgs ...the 1 ton block = 1016 kg meaning that you were 699kg's overweight 21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021

SO, therefore the D3 (7 seat) can not legally carry 7 adults if it ONLY has a 512 Kg carry capacity !!
Medically, an adult is assumed to be 70-80 KG.
7x 70Kg=490Kg, BUT 7x80Kg= 560Kg (gosh I'm good at maths) regards
Peter
