Strata Florida, which tyres/rims to use?

Hopefully going to drive the Strata Florida in September. Never been there before, but seen lots of video clips and read aricles on it.

I have a set of 19" Goodyear MTR's or 18" Pirelli ATR's. The ATR's have always got me everywhere I want to go, but the 18" rims are unmarked and I'd prefer to keep them that way. My 19" MTR's are on rims that are already scuffed.

I'm assuming that the SF has sections that could potentially be quite damaging to rims. Is this so? In which case I'll put on the MTR's.

I would go for high side walls as the rocks are quite unforgiving. The strata end has rather sharp rocks. The rest is quite small and gravelly.

Look here under "Big Weekend in Wales": http://www.4x4adventuretours.co.uk/blog.html

You'll see me doing the bomb hole at Strata Florida which was great. I would suuggest you go with the MTR's (you'll see I put on my STT's) as you will mark the alloys somewhere on route.

Have fun.... Very Happy

Is there any really muddy sections on the SF?

I forgot that I also have a set 19" ATR's on scuffed rims. The tyres have about 5mm on the ones that were on the rear, but due to worn suspension bushes the fronts were worn down to 2-3mm on the inner edges with 4mm on the rest.

If it's not too muddy they'd be fine and I'd not worry at all about damaging either them or the rims.

I'll probably sell the MTR's, as I've really not needed or used them since having Pirelli ATR's.

So if there's not any really muddy sections, I'm thinking it might be wise to use the 19" ATR's rather than risk any damage to the MTR's.

No mud, just rock and water.

19 inch ATR's will do the job no problem,, did it several times with D2 on standard road tyres, no problems and countless times on the "1 wheel" drive motorbike.

Biggest problem is if anyone else is taking a petrol engined vehicle, take the brew kit, you'll need it while they get mis-firing dried and sorted. Very Happy

Thanks for the replies.

I think I'll use my set of 19" ATR's. Less noise and better mpg on the road trip down there than the MTR's and I'm not that bothered if they do get damaged.

Nay bother from the midges if you use Smidge:

Tried and tested by me and the family in the Highlands and Rum (midge central) a few weeks ago.

I'll remember to pack it Thumbs Up
