Essential parts and diagnostic tool for overland trip
Anybody can recommend a diagnostic tool for the D3 which is easy to use, shows and clears most of the failures found, is reliable,... and of course is of a good quality-price ratio? The kind of tool you should have in your D3 when being in the middle of nowhere with no land rover dealer around, and which could you help you at least to drive back to the civilisation... On about the same subject: are their any parts known to be "weak but essentials" which should be taken with and could be very usefull during a breakdown?

The only 'problem' with the Faultmate is you really need a laptop too if you need to change anything to 'get you home'.
How far are you planning on going from civilisation?
Well intially to Morrocco but knowing that the only Land Rover dealer is in Casablanca on the Atlantic coast when I will be most of the time in the east or in the south, it can be quite a long driver/recovery... Also, I am most of the time alone, so a good magic stick in case of trouble would be welcome. Until know and after a few trips I never had any trouble but I do not want to push my luck to far!
In a farther future I also would like to plan a trip to Mongolia but that's another story...

But seriously, do you not think the OP is looking for a little more than a FCR? Especially if his goal is to get home, rather than read and clear codes?

FCR will do this it wont reflash ecu,s with updated software but then again the OP hasn't asked for that

I don't take anything other than some small bits like wires, crimp connectors, electrical tape etc and just enjoy it. If anything more major breaks down (such as a wheel bearing) it will be more than a roadside job to change IMO so will still get myself recovered by flatbed to a dealer.Dennis

but sods law says it will be somethign else that fails like a steering angle sensor or suspension ECU...
if you just travelling on tarmac then all i would take is some top-up engine oilDuncan

Indeed, if I would travel only on tarmac I would not worry at all, even in North Africa countries where you always find someone to pull you/ drop you somewhere, but I want to travel mainly offroad where essential parts could be of some help...

Think the level of diag tool you need is driven by the spares you're taking. If taking a set of height sensors then being able to recalibrate the suspension would be handy. Can you do that with the FCR ? Either the full faultmate or the IDS tool seem like they would do everything you need.
