both versions extremely capable
i tow 2 tonne regularly with no issues on a manual just get comfortable with and use the low range if required
But if undecided i would say auto for towing purely for the no clutch worry although equally as many auto box judder stories on here
all other times for me i would chose a manual but thats just a personnal preference thing i find autos a bit boring as a driving experience but most seem to prefer ( maybe when i retire )
and yes ive had 2 autos MY05 SE D3 Manual my first LR what a car
MY10 HSE D4 auto
MY14 XXV more buttons than the spaceshuttle

I tow 3 tonnes with mine, which is an auto. Have just come from a manual series 1 Disco (yes I know they are worlds apart) but from the towing point of view the auto is effortless. Really good at hill starts, which in a manual you always feel like you are trying to kill the clutch. Makes reversing a doodle as well, again because it is so smooth and controlled.
Only recommendation is to change the gearbox oil and filter every once in a blue moon to help it along. (damned sight cheaper than changing a clutch! ) RRS HSE 2012 Stage 1 remap, timed heater General Grabbers
Blue D3 with winter pack, xenon lights, Geoff's engine performance upgrade, egr's blanked, mega flushed gearbox, 3 new wishbones, RLD sump guard, V8 brakes front and rear, General Grabbers. Rock/tree sliders. Now gone
Defender 90 tray back, 3 winches (with one or two other subtle mods) Now for sale

That's an unfair comparison
I've towed a 'van with both a D1 manual and a D3 manual and they are incomparable. The Bearded Dragon
