anything I should watch out for when buying a USB pen drive for music storage in the D4?
thinking maximum memery size and also physical size?
want to get a 32GB one that should be enough for me but don't want to shell out £60 and find it don't fit!

64GB works just fine on mine formated as FAT 32.
Occasionally it'll not scan all folders and tracks if you select the USB option too quickly after start up. I've got just over 37GB of music over 16,000 tracks on my pen drive.
Hope yours works too.

What about an external HDD? I'm thinking the 150Gb+ Passport drives rather than a SSD USB stick I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

if they connect via USB then it should but bumpy ride may affect the HDD?

USB hard drives don't work, the vehicles electronics and memory can't support a hard drive. I've tried two conventional drives one a 40gb and a 320gb one both with NTFS and FAT32 formatting using internal (USB) and external 12v utility socket to USB power. You could try an SSD one and see if it'll play as it probably has less of current draw. The problem I believe, is anything that is multi layer is beyond the D4's ability to mount and cope with in terms of computing power.

No flack - you'll need the Land Rover ACM kit fitted - allows connection of iPods/iPhones and other devices with a USB interface. The old kit used to manage a small HDD according to this post. Time flies like an arrow; fruit flies like a banana

OK, got USB sorted, 32GB san disk cruzer.
just checking on line car audio manual and it suggests only putting music files on to speed up file access/checking.
if on my PC i make a folder for other items "hidden" will the car software still 'see it' and slow things down or will it not see the hidden file?
want to make sure i have my music sorted for the drive home!

A few tips on file types and folder/file naming.
This is what I have learned from my own experiences...
If you are copying music files from iTunes to your USB stick, check that the file is mp3 and not mp4 (most of mine are mp4). The Land Rover system will not play mp4 files and they need to be converted.
The audio system will play music files in alphabetical order no matter what order you have them in a playlist. So, if you copy a favourite playlist from iTunes into a folder on your USB stick, even if you have the files stored in your preferred order, the Land Rover system will re-arrange them. You have to number the tracks to get them to play in order, this also applies to albums.

The USB stick works perfectly for me when the files are organised in Windows Media Player style, which numbers tracks and gets everything in the right order. Searching seems to take very little time - but I haven't tried putting anything I don't want to system to read on the stick to be honest. I just bought another stick exclusively to leave in the car.

My experience exactly the same as Winger's. I also bought a seven quid stick to put music on for the car. The LR system is much better than the USB interface in my 09 Mini. 2011 D4 Landmark, Mini Cooper SD Clubman, Range Rover Vogue SE
