i guess your idea of leaving it in the car makes more sense.
i was thinking that i'd just have 1 pen for every thing but at least now that leaves more room for music!  XC90 T8 R Design Pro

When I get time i'll get myself a 32 or 64gb USB stick and organise it the way I want with playlists etc. No need to keep the ipod in the car then.
Winger, what do you mean by 'Windows Media Player style'?
I only use iTunes to play music so just copied straight from iTunes onto the USB drive.

Classic Windows folder structure:
[Artist]>[Album Title]>[Track List (numbered)]
You can then browse by Artist, then down to Album level and finally either play the entire album, or just a specific track. Of course, you could always do the same with playlists, but that would then require a degree of duplicity - if you've already stored a whole album.

For clarity, a single track that is stored under the structure I outline, and it also stored under a playlist, would have to be physically on the stick twice. The LR system doesn't work like the iPod and allow you to create playlists that they access the particular track, from a single location, more than once. If you think of the stick and the files as being little more than a pile of CDs, that's probably the way to look at it.
Apple's solution probably offers more flexibility, but I leave the iPods to other members of my family and cannot be bothered with them!

Cheers Winger,
I understand the file structure and also the need for duplicate files to create playlists from a main list.
I'm going to have a mess about to see what works best for me. (I hate duplicate files)!
I havn't touched the USB stick since the week we got the D4

You have your finger on it....whatever works best for you! I use mine like a jukebox, and tend to listen to an entire album at a time.....of course, you can shuffle the entire collection if you like!

I am new to the site after having just taken delivery of a new Discovery 4 XS after years of Landcruisers. I have a large music and music video collection and wanted to see if I could get them all to work on the entertainment system. My album collection is held on my Ipod which was an easy fix as that was just connected to the Ipod USB connector.
However for my singles collection and music video collection I needed something else and the memory sticks tend to be expensive once you move up to larger capacity. What I needed for my issue was a larger capacity hard drive and so I bought a Toshiba external USB 500GB drive (cost less than £40). The Landrover manual suggests that you can connect anything to the USB connector provided it is formatted in FAT32. Formatting drives in FAT 32 can be an issue with Windows as whilst this can be done from a command line it often fails if the drive is a large capacity. I overcame this problem using a bit of software called Compuapps Swisskinfe. At a cost of around $8 it quickly formatted the full drive capacity in FAT 32.
I then created two directories one for the singles collection (stored as MP3 files) and one for the music video collection (stored as DIVX files).
When I go to My Music or My Video and select the drive the system automatically finds the right directory and plays away happily. In theory I could now convert and transfer a load of DVD's to DIVX format and now have a collection available 24/7.
