Lower Steering Column

I'm about to replace my lower steering column to (hopefully) cure the stiffness especially at low speed - I've tried WD40 and that worked but it could only be considered temporary.

Of those who have already done this change, did you grease up the new UJ before fitting and if so, what did you use?

The new joint looks nicely sealed but it obviously dries out somehow!

I probably would not bother as it is not specifically called for and there is a school of thought (not mine) that additional greese could trap contaminants.

Put another way your first lasted over 7 years and are you really concerned that you could be replacing it again when the car is 15 years old?

Hi Robbie - I did think about external grease just trapping grit etc - you only have to look at a motorcycle chain to see the junk that sticks.

Not really bothered about replacing it in another 7 years either - I'll be an OAP by then so the lad can do it Laughing

What really prompted it was the fact the UJ on the shaft of my old BM m/c has a grease nipple - still have trouble getting my head round sealed for life stuff.....
