Cooper Zeon LTZ 20" Tyres

Hi Looking for some advice probably been covered already in the past but I have just purchased a set of 20” RRS V-spoke alloys which I am currently in the process of refurbishing, and intended fitting to my 2006 Discovery 3 with new Cooper Zeon LTZ (AT) Tyres unsure on best suited size either 275/45R20 or 285/50R20 would prefer the latter but obviously clearance may be an issue any advice are wheel spacers needed?
Any advice appreciated Gary

either on an 06 is OK, is just on 07/08 later that a mod to the chassis causes rubbing if you use a 285/50.

I would go the 275/45x20 direction.

Fitted 285/50x20 on a new L/Cruiser this morning, big tyre.

I know one or 2 folks have run 285/50x20's, but I think you are pushing the gearing by going to that size.

I've always stuck to the rule of thumb of not going over 2.5% of a stock tyre size.

Specification Sidewall Radius Diameter Circumference Revs/Mile Difference
255/55-19 5.5in 15.0in 30.0in 94.4in 671 0.0%
285/50-20 5.6in 15.6in 31.2in 98.1in 646 3.9%

In this case, the 285/50 is almost 4% bigger. You dont want to end up having to use low range to do hill starts Shocked

Sorry to ask a question over Brecken but, I am running 20'' wheels with 295-45-20 which track (follow tram lines) like mad (I think Al has posted about this in the past).
Do the 285 track? or am I best looking at 265 or 275 tyres?? I have been looking at LTZ's as they would suit the on and off road driving that I do but I am not sure what is best.
AJS, Please could you send me a price for 285 and 275 LTZ's if you have them.

Thanks.

Re: Cooper Zeon LTZ 20" Tyres

Thanks for all the info and advice I guess it’ll have to be the 275/45x20 not wanting to put too much extra strain on suspension and steering either, especially after spending a whole week around the nights changing all the suspension arm bushes and ball joints and anti-roll bar links earlier this year.
Thanks Gary

There are a lot of people on here that run with the 265/70R17, which is a taller tyre than the 285/50R20. I've never heard of them causing any issues, and have used that size myself for many years. There was never any feeling that the car was under-geared.

Cheers,

Gordon

I would add though that it also depends on the wheel offset.
Whilst I had absolutely no rubbing issues on my old D3 with 285's, I know some that did even though they had the pre 07 chassis.
This can be resolved though by fitting spacers.

I have 285's on my 06! I laser cut some 6mm stainless spacers and that just pulls the tyre away from the suspension enough by about 8mm had three sets of these on now. Look and feel far far better thaqn the 275's.
If you need a set of the spacers give me a shout i can flog you a set cheap in either stainless or zinc plated steel Wink

And before anyone says " I dont want wheel spacers because of the extra wear on the wheel bearings"
B*#~+cks!! 6mm WILL NOT cause any more wear on a wheel bearing! Shocked

Yeh CJ - I ran 295/45x20 Grabber UHP's on my old D3. They looked the dogs doodahs, but with that wide a tread pattern, I was pulled all over the place by ruts in the road. I went for 265/50x20's in the end, and thats what I have on my latest D3, as these gave me a decent looking tyre for the size of the car and wheel, with a decent ride quality, and were also availble in 111 wieght rating.
