Sat Nav Screen Retrofit (but not for sat nav |
|
Hi All,
I have a D3 05 S model, which i have done a few bits too already, but the list of intentions goes on!
I would like the sat nav screen installed for a few reasons
1. For the ability to install a reversing camera that looks onto the towball.
2. For having the 4x4 info enabled if possible
3. For having the telephone dialing and radio interface on the screen - Would be great if ipod control was possible?
I am really not fussed about having the sat nav installed and operational just the above.
Does anyone know if it is possible, and if so which bits are needed, is it just the screen and associated camera etc?
Thanks

I had the same issues as you and ended up fitting a Car PC in the rear that run Centrafuse on top of Windows 7. I got hold of broken Sat Nav screen and replaced all the innards for a decent 7" transflective touch screen hitch is linked via VGA/USB to the rear. Plus all the usual gps, Bluetooth, wireless, odb II plugged in
It's took a lot of work but getting there.
May not be the easiest way if you are not inclined rip apart the interior.....
Keep meaning to write some of this up on my blog...

Most of the bits I brought either from Linitx.co.uk, ebay or had lying around.
PC is a Dual Core 1.6 ghz Atom based rig, with 2gb RAM, 160GB HDD and Windows 7 ultimate. As I say I used Centrafuse as the main application for all the touch related stuff.
PSU is an M2-ATX that covers the 12v vehicle connection. I use the aux feed to trigger the on when the key is turned and draw power off a secondary battery (had used to use the towing feed)
For Nav I have Memory Map (all UK maps), Navmii, Sygic and Destinator installed so am pretty well covered.
I used a decent USB GPS that I mounted in the roof lining that works perfectly. Added a Belkin BT adaptor and Cisco USB Wireless adaptor as well.
Also a decent USB capture device (think its Roxio branded) that I have a rear mounted composite camera connected to (so I can record and view) and an awesome Velman K8055 Analogue/Digital/In/Out card that I use to tap into the steering wheel controls (analogue) and reversing lights (digital) to trigger the rear camera view.
Sound connects to the aux in on the head unit however I have just upgraded it to an awesome Pioneer unit
Takes up time but its been worth it.
Hope that helps. Let me know if you want to know anything...
