Turbo Actuator
Hi, I have been to my local Indi to put the diagnostics on my D3 and no faaults at all showing, but i have a fault with no power below 2000rpm and then its off like a rocket, they said the EGR valves were working ok and it has good turbo boost, but this fault is not there when cold it happens after about 2 miles in the morning it is accompanied with a wooshing air noise when you take your foot of the gas, they said it might be the turbo actuator sticking, does anybody know if these are the symptoms this causes

The woosh sounds like an intercooler hose. Any smoke under acceleration and have you poked and prodded the hose to check for splits?
Hope it is the hose as at least they are cheap and easy.Land Rover - Turning Drivers into Mechanics Since 1948

I have seen a car before where the actuator could not control the boost pressure, and the turbo was running at max pressure all the time. When you lifted off the throttle, it gave a whistle \ whoosh noise, so it could be the turbo playing up...My D3 Build Thread

Sounds like the turbo over-run when you charge up a hill offroad and don't make it, there is a wowowo type noise as it spools down. I only get this offroading.

Has your car been re mapped at all? If so can you put it back to standard and see if this still happens? Had something very similar over the past few days. Hoping its not the actuator...

Hi, thanks for all the replies, no the car is standard not re-maped, is the actuator accessable to check if it is sticking or do you have to remove the turbo ?

You can check it through the wheel arch, or from above once the battery tray has been removedMy D3 Build Thread
Just had mine into dealers with suspected seized actuator, turned out the linkage itself was ok the problem was with the stepper motor which operates it, result was new turbo needed as the motor is not sold seperately like the linkage
Hope yours is actuator I'm not as good as I once was........but I'm as good once as I ever was.

Hi guys
quite a number of turbos are being replaced because of a seized (burnt out) actuator motor.
There are two factors contributing to this:
1, Heat transferred from the turbo exhaust housing via the mounting bracket onto the actuator (given time this can lead to problems)
2. This is the most common one - turbo VVT mechanism jammed due to excessive carbon build up. The tolerances on the actuator ring are very small. So any substantial build-up of carbon will lead to impaired operation. (See attached pics of the three stages of VVT actuation).
Point 2 can easily be prevented by adding 1:200 ratio 2sO (Jaso-FC) to the diesel with EVERY fillup.
Point 1 can be prevented by ceramically coating the turbo housing inside and out with the Powerkote (TM) process. See attached pic
Another possible turbo failure stems from a partially blocked cat, which then radiates excess heat onto the exhaust turbo housing. This then over time leads to hot shut down failure. Ceramic coating kills this one for good.
