Should engine oil be checked warm or cold?
I'm sure I've read conflicting advice so thought I would ask the gurus in the know

Cold, so the oil is in the sump, also on level ground.
Some autos need to checked running when checking the transmission fluid level.

Doesn't matter. Just give the oil enough time to drain back to the sump, normally a few minutes will do to give a 'good enough' reading on the dipstick My D3 Build Thread

I would agree with Disco_Mikey & Flack in most respects although hot oil quickly draining from the dip stick and having some on the side walls of the dip stick tube can make taking accurate readings a bit more difficult.
But frankly is dipping your oil so difficult that if you were concerned at all that you would not bother to do it in both hot and cold cases
In the last few times i recently dipped the Oil in my Rangie i actually was not that concerned about the level, although obviously i would have noted a low level and corrected it. I was actually much more concerned about the color and apparent viscosity of it.
I was pretty happy that my Oil was the shade of Tea and seemed to stick to the dipstick like glue as opposed to being some jet Black spangly water like stuff.

get a D4 then your problem changes to "can I remember to check the oil before starting the engine otherwise I'll need to wait 15 minutes !!"Duncan
