2010 Discovery 4 3.0 TDV6 HSE Auto Ipanema SandDiscovery 4

The Dunkeld Land Rover experience is marvellous. It is based in the grounds of the Dunkeld House Hotel which is a hugely civilised place on the banks of the River Tay. I'd love to come and would happily bring my Disco 3 TDv6 auto to play with.

Auto's are increasingly the preferred choice of serious offroaders and it works brilliantly in the Disco 3. The box and Tdv6 engine suit each other perfectly with the only downside being that the fuel consumption appears to be a good deal worse than the manual (mine averages 21 mpg !). The TD5 Disco with auto box was a dog (a loud, slow and ungainly dog at that) but the Tdv6 is light years ahead of that.

Simon Buck at Devon 4x4 uses some of the best prepared Land Rover off roaders in competition all over the world and he now seems to always use auto boxes in preference to manuals. He won last years Malaysian Rain Forest Challenge in a bob tailed Range Rover V8 auto. See www.devon4x4.com for details.

England 2016 Discovery 4 3.0 SDV6 HSE Auto Firenze RedDiscovery 4

I had always had manuals, up to now, all of my previous 4 x D2's (Diesels) were great in the mud, and I learnt at Eastnor Castle. In the D2, all manual provided better engine braking when descending steep slopes than the auto, and as such was the transmission of choice, so I'm keen to hear more of auto's taking a more prominant lead in off-road activities, especially D3's.

My D3 is an automatic, basically since I do long distance, and often get caught in traffic, This time I was pursuaded that an auto would be best. At least now when stuck in traffic, I dont have to fight against the clutch spring (I'm sure that way LR clutches dont burn out as there are few strong enough to hold it such) Smile so I chose an auto.

The D3 the auto is superb, however on a steep (onroad) descent I have to stick it into commandshift mode and reduce the selected gear to provide sufficient engine braking, to descend gracefully than running wild and possibly losing control, and wonder if similar engine charactersistics affect off-road. Does engaging low-range also affect the engine mapping too such that it uses the engine compression, or shold we always have to engage hill descent?

Likewise, I'd never had an Auto before, but bought it for 2 reasons: I reckon that 2nd hand buyers will expect a car of this price to be Auto(!) and I reckoned i was getting the best of both worlds - no fighting with a heavy gearbox/clutch in town traffic but the ability to use Command Shift for offroad in the same way as a manual. Seems to work fine & the autoshifting is great, so smooth & responsive for normal driving & the Command shift is effectively a clutchless manual for off-road (but with computer over-ride if under or over reving!) BUT the fuel consumption is dire!!

From what I can tell the fuel consumption on the auto appears to be some 25%-30% worse than the manual. Is this right ? And if so - why ???

Almost everycar I've specified has had the next owner in mind but frankly has not delivered any return, not once. Sure, specify pink leather and your in trouble come trade in, but this bunk'um about you must have leather, air con, roof rails, auto etc, is just that. For the first time I've said to hell with the next owner and spent the money on what I actually want, so no roof rails, no auto. I know it'll do diddly squat to the trade in...you get screwed whatever the spec', so save you money at the ordering stage...thats the secret.

I've been wondering about that as well. 3 things that occurred to me, but will need technical advice on are: (1) is there a torque convertor that is acting almost like a slipping clutch & therefore using up power, (2) when stopped, how much power is being used if you leave it in "D" and (3) it strikes me that although max torque is at 1800/1900rpm (???), the auto box rarely seems to be running at that but rather holding revs at 2000-3000 (if you shift to Command Shift you ca generally force it up a further gear from the gear selected by the auto) and I thought that max torque corresponded to the best running speed.

Anyone got enough technical knowledge of cars & auto boxes to confirm/contradict these thoughts?

Final proof that autos have the edge on manuals in extreme offroad situations. Today whilst competing in the Forest of Ae winch event I was partnered by a LR90 V8 auto. On steep winch climbs of loose gravel / sand / shale slopes the auto could keep just enough power on to turn the wheels (and so help the winch) without digging 4 big holes (diff locks front & back). The manual was far harder to do the same (without burning the clutch) and as a result the manual tended to dig holes which made the climbs far harder, the winch worked far more and as a result by early afternoon the winch burnt out !!! I'll get an auto box fitted soon.
