Manual Clutch D3's

just noticed this on a bulletin for a couple weeks ago

Subject/Concern: 2.7 TDV6 Clutch Issues
Model:
Discovery 3 / LR3 (LA) Year: 2005-2009
VIN Range: 5A000304-9A513325
Discovery 4/LR4 (LA) Year: 2010-2012
VIN Range: AA513342-CA632839
Markets: Diesel Markets Only
Section: 308-01
Summary

The customer may report a concern that when the clutch pedal is fully released the engine ‘races’ during acceleration predominantly at low speeds in higher gears. A strong odour maybe noticed from under the vehicle when, or after, a slow speed manoeuvre has taken place (i.e. difficult parking manoeuvre), especially when on gradients. Other noticeable symptoms may include the clutch pedal sticking in the downward position or not releasing fully, difficulty in selecting gears and loss of the gear position display on the instrument cluster and/or the park brake light being illuminated. Investigation using diagnostic equipment reveals that diagnostic trouble code (DTC) P0820 may be stored.

Cause: The clutch drive plate lining material is not tolerant to high heat inputs caused by slippage (i.e. driver resting their foot on the clutch pedal when not changing gear). The material then becomes soft and is damaged beyond recovery.Suggested Customer Concern Code - P24.

The clutch pedal load will increase by approximately 15%, please make sure that this is discussed with the customer prior to fitment. Where an increase in pedal load is not acceptable to the customer it is advised that the current standard clutch kit is fitted, part number LR005809.

Habitual clutch pedal riding even with the high load clutch kit fitted will eventually still result in premature wear of the clutch. It is not good driving practice to ride the clutch (resting foot on the clutch pedal, when not changing gear), the driver of the vehicle should be advised to use the left foot rest adjacent to the pedal to avoid further occurrences of this problem in the future and thus prolonging the life of the clutch.

Action: If a customer reports a concern of any of the symptoms above, carry out the Service Instruction outlined below.

High clamp load clutch kit PN URF500060

and the good news is the high clamp load one is £40 cheaper

Well as someone in the VIN range with 103k on the original clutch then this is a bit of good news.

Nick - how much is a clutch and fly wheel for my 54 plate S?

Cheers.

A stronger clutch option was sought by early users of armoured D3s. Good to see one available now but a few years late as we seemed to eat clutches on the armoured versions. Of course, they did have quite a hard (and short) life.

When I learnt how to drive buses, my instructor
had a broomhandle, with which he hit my left kneecap with,
if I should dare to rest my foot on the clutchpedal.. Twisted Evil

So after a period of a slightly bluish knee, I learnt my lesson, and always rest the foot on the floor.. Wink

Uffe The equivalent for driving a manual D3 would be if dare not use lowrange when doing any manuaver at low speed on inclines.
