| Finding a faulty parking sensor |
|
I'm guessing I have a front parking sensor with an intermittent fault.
It comes on (as though you're very close to a wall) and stays on when the speed drops below 10mph or so. It does it maybe 50% of the time.
Am I right it's likely to be a faulty sensor?
What's the best way to find which one is the dud?

Best way is to read the fault codes & shoudl tell you which one is faulty. Other than that, make sure the parking sensors are on and listen to each of them clicking when you put your hand in front of each one. If you hear the click on some (its very quiet) and not others, then its the ones that arent clicking.  Bodsys Brake Bible

My new IIDTool arrived today and within minutes it told me which sensor was reading 10mm.
Very impressed!

My MK1 audio listening device told me the same thing for nothing

Hello! I've got a fault stating 'front parking sensors deactivated', I assume that this isdue to one of the sensors being faulty? I haven't got access to a diagnostics machine, so assume the only other way is to replace the sensors, one at a time? But I gather that the middle ones and side ones are different? Any advice would be appreciated, especially advice on how to remove the sensors! Now onto my second D3, alongside my fourth FFRR - I don't learn!

I did mine and it worked just fine, my chain of events was:
Buy IIDTool
Get IIDTool to tell me which one was faulty (inner left)
Purchase replacement
Remove grill
Remove headlights
Remove sump plate
Remove NSF wheel
Remove NSF fender moulding
Partially remove bumper cover
I was then able to reach around the bumper and release the two clips on the sensor (which I broke in the process) and replace the sensor. I taped the sensor to the housing because of the broken clips.
Note the sensors are supplied primed only and require painting (if you care about that stuff which I don't)
With hindsight I wish I'd removed the bumper entirely by also removing the OSF wheel and fender moulding.

It's not on their list but if you use live chat they can get them, they discounted it to £296.94 including VAT and postage, this is below RRP but slightly above some other sites but I've been very impressed with the service from Britcar so I don't mind paying a couple of quid more.

Ok, thanks for that John. Was hoping not to ahve to spend that much at present (hence wondering if it would be cheaper to buy one of each type and change them until it works?). Now onto my second D3, alongside my fourth FFRR - I don't learn!

I guess you could try disconnecting them one at a time too, I'm not sure if that would work though.

If you don't have a fault code reader, listening to them clicking works too. Then swap the dead one with a good one and you'll know if it's the sensor or the wiring loom, and can order the right part.
