From the manual
D4 owners manual wrote:
Prior to checking the oil level ensure that:
x The vehicle is on level ground.
x The engine oil has reached working temperature (oil is hot).
x The engine has been switched off for 10 minutes, as the system will not give an accurate
reading until the oil level has stabilised.
The oil level can then be checked as follows:
1. Switch on the ignition (do not start the engine).
2. Ensure Park (P) is selected.
3. Select the Service menu using the driver information module menu control (see 58, VEHICLE
INFORMATION AND SETTINGS MENU).
Cheers Ian

The disco 4 does not have a dip stick, is there one that will fit the tube at the front of the engine ? I have to believe that thel and rover technicians dont use that rubbish dash display system.

Hi Rod,
that tube is for sucking the oil out. Lots of people lament the loss of the dipstick and that topic has been covered ad infinitum

There's a dipstick in my D4. Usually to be found behind the steering wheel.

Oil level unavailable
Sorry for late post on this one. I've had a D4 2012 GS for 5 months, bought with 49k miles on clock. Having completed 9k miles since i thought ( i know i shiuld have checked earlier) to check oil level. Once i found menu option and read it i panicked. Not available. Added 2litres, tried again, not available. Added another 2 litres tonight and just checked again, not available. Dont know what to do now. In each case i' d had engine running, tunred off then set to ignition on mode only. Thoughts? I might wait 30 minutes and check again.

I wouldnt be running the car at all until you have had land rover check the oil level.
Assume the D4 holds the same pathetic amount of oil as the D3? 5.5 litres, if so you have added 4 litres and are asking for serious engine damage.
The trucks have had the same set up for roughly 10 years and again its a real pita, you just cant beat a dipstick for simplicity, you wont believe the amount of times I have had to drain excess oil off!
Lots of mercs went this way in 2001 and there was a workshop dipstick available for about 20 quid, much faster to use.
The merc was though quite clever and could even tell when you had to much oil in the sump whilst driving along and this was a 2001 model.
