Can anyone point me to a doc/website where I can read up about the system used on our car?

Best of You Tube (or maybe even you tube)
& there is a podcast that explains about diffs & 4WD

but you have to take on board something thats a bit conceptual...when turing a corner all 4 wheels are going diferent rotational speeds.

if you cant locate this mail me & I will work out an addreswhere you can go to

LR did used to do a guide that explained the permanent 4WD system in Janet & John fashion...I may have a copy somewhere
 BREXIT - done properly.

Save the Dipstick Flagbearer-keep it simple, less likely to fail campaign-agenda items:Starting Handles, Acetylene Lamps.

D3 HSE-perfectly formed, passenger friendly...has real DIPSTICK
Jag XK-but sadly no DIPSTICK...HUGE design fault
FL2 has DIPSTICK..."real comfort in rear seats"
VW Golf wondermobile (?)..has real DIPSTICK
Morris Minor..original DIPSTICK technology..and a real KEY.

search cutaways plus the item
e.g " cutaways diffs"

this will show nice pics of internal workings.

a picture is 10 thousand words and all that
It is better to have and not need it then need and not have it.

The best explanation of how a differential works is here:

It's superb. It's also 80 years old.

Dont forget that the D3 \ 4 doesn't have a conventional drive system found on older 4x4's ...the power can be sent to any individual wheel dependent on the circumstance and that combined with traction control and all the other aspects of Terrain Control keep the thing moving where others might have trouble e.g. cross axle type situations ....with or without a rear locking diff Smile
