Winter A/T tyre

Hi all,

Not sure if these tyres exist but I'm looking for a combined winter and A/T tyre.

A tyre that has the grip on the road of a winter tyre
But also the grip for off road and the strength off road.
Looking at 18" sizes.

Thanks
 Ian

How many times Rolling Eyes

Good in snow != (does not equal) winter tyre

If you want a winter rated (not just M&S) tyre that is also good off road, you may want to look at the Good Year Duratrac. AT and ATR are good in snow but neither are a patch on a winter rated tyre on cold, wet roads. this is based on me driving 150000 miles in D3s on MT, AT and winter rubber in temperatures from -21°C to +41°C Thumbs Up

Just to expand on my initial post.

I'm looking to have two sets of wheels
1 for normal road use and caravan use which will be purely road tyres.
2 for winter road driving on uk roads in the snow and slush but also hoping to use these tyres as our off road and green laning at weekends.
I've heard all about how winter tyres provide more grip on the roads in snow conditions.

Do A/T tyres provide better grip than the average road tyre for winter road driving or is the winter tyre far superior?
Would a winter tyre be as good off road and do they have the strength of the A/T tyre for the abuse it'd receive?

Thanks for the comments so far

I think you are going about it all wrong to be honest, you are not going to get a dedicated "cold weather" compound tyre which is going to be as good at off roading as an AT tyre as they are primarlily road based treads.

If I were you I would have one set of wheels for day to day and greenlaning use fitted with the Pirelli Scorpion ATR tyre, which is probably the closest AT tyre to a road tyre but still provides excellent performance in both road and off road conditions, and then have a set of tyres fitted with a winter/ cold weather tyre of your choice.

The ATR and GG AT are NOT winter tyres, they may have the M+S letters on them (Mud and Snow) but that doesn't mean they are the same compound as a winter tyre.

Having driven my D3 with Grabber AT2's down an iced up road and then driven a new G-Wagen with Pirelli Winter tyres on I can tell you the difference was incredible, the winter tyres gave the confidence of a dry road on a sunny day.

Thumbs Up

Winter tyre, on road, is far superior to any non-winter rated AT once the mercury drops. AT is better than normal road rubber but nowhere near as good as winter rubber.

Sadly the winter road tyres are utter poo offroad. The new GY Duratrac is pretty unique in being a MT/AT crossover (not as aggressive as MTs of old, while being true winter rated. AT and ATR are good, but the Duratrac spec suggests better. Also depends on your rim size as the GYis only available in 19 fitment at present and, being new in that size, is in short supply.

As Andy says, Grabber AT has many happy customers, and if you're on 18" rims, along with the ATR offers best choice, ut it's still not winter rated.

General Grabber AT's

I agree they are excellent in the Snow Thumbs Up
Not specifically a Winter rated tyre but never the less they are very good substitute.

If you are definately requiring X2 sets of tyres:
Road:- http://www.toyo.co.uk/tire/pattern/proxes-t1-sport-suv
Winter:- http://www.dunlopwintertyres.co.uk/
I think you should consider a third for Off Road as has been said above the Winter tyres will be utterly useless on rocks and in the gloop !

No difference to MPG that I could achieve. I went from GG AT to road tyres and then back to AT's after seeing no MPG improvement.

The GG AT are an awesome tyre.

I noticed no road noise & change in MPG when I had them fitted.

Supplied & fitted by AJS who were very helpful & did an excellent job.

I think the main thing to remember is to drive to the conditions, no tyre is perfect, it relys on the person behind the wheel to know theirs & their vehicles limitations.

I agree entirely with RR207, supplied & fitted by AJS, delighted both with the tyres & their service.

No perceived change in MPG or road noise.
