Exploding Front Diff = what collateral damage
Quick Q.
my fornt diff is on the way out. its been whining for a while now. I will need to get it changed but when ?
In my old defender the front diff was whining for ages and had some pretty tough offroad use before I got a recon unit.
if the front diff fails - what other damage has been experienced. just wanting to see whether i wait for it to fail, which could be another 12 months away or get it changed asap. logic say change it now, but why change it if i dont need to.
it only starts making a noise at 80mph ish and under load..
cheers Duncan

Mine whined for months then spat out diff oil at Boughrood and grinded like some dirty dancer all the way home ........ on arrival a stream of molten metal ran from underneath the motor. At this point I made the assumption that the diff was clearly fecked. 8)21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021

By the way there are no recon/exchange units around (unless you're lucky of course)...its new units only with a new LR part number
Nick (TLO) is cheaper as you would expect, but my problem was that the cost of getting it here blew away all Nick's saving and more"Better to remain silent and be thought a fool, than to speak out and remove all doubt" ?.....what rubbish...

Mine whined and made weird bearing-like noises for a couple of months before i got it changed around a week ago. My local dealer here sourced a recon unit from the UK. No idea where in the UK he got it from though!Dennis

You may want to budget for a drive shaft too. When my diff was replaced last month the drive shaft spines were burred around the breakaway joint so that was replaced at the same time.

My front diff has been whining progressively louder for two years, although mainly only on the over-run.
I changed the oil at Christmas ( I think ) when it started leaking slightly from the rear seal, and it was then obvious that there was a lot of metal/paint dissolved in the old oil (which looked like fresh aluminium paint) and the magnet on the sump plug looked like the big hair on an 80's pop star.
The noise levels dropped dramatically (90%+) with the new oil. I have since changed it twice more, the last time the old oil was almost see through, so not much more paint to collect from the casing. The leak has also more or less stopped. The amount of swarf is much reduced on the drain plug magnet too, so I think there's less damage happening now it's not chewing paint flakes.
I just wish my dealers had found the issue when it was in warranty and I reported the whine to them, but that was two years ago. No doubt I'll get it changed in the next year or two but due to the lack of swarf now I'm not too concerned TBH. Of course I'll change it earlier if it does fail completely Dr. Ian Malcolm:
"Yeah, but your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn't stop to think if they should."

I reported on the forum about a slight whirring noise from when I purchased my D3 at about 100k - it got progressively worse resulting in an investigation of where the noise was coming from. Two dealers guaranteed the noise was from the tranny resulting in it and the converter being stripped down only to find nothing (said it was like new) and on replacement back in the vehicle noise was still there.
Snatched a Nissan out of a bog one weekend in the bush and when I got out on the bitumen the sound was deafening. Didn't know what it was, sounded like something scraping underneath. Got louder with speed. Ended up being the front diff gone with metal bits in the oil.
Actually the quote was quite reasonable for a brand new unit with the actual final cost being $150.00 less than the price quoted - my dealers a good bloke - no price gauging.
Guess what?? when I got it back the noise had gone!
Both dealers tracked the noise down with a stethoscope - so who knows????
I did drive about 100 km by the time I got to get it fixed, without any other damage being caused.
