Zippity Doo Dah Zippity Ay
My oh my What a wonderful day
Front diff changed today with mucho help from disco-steve
replaced with a used dif from a 2007 RRSPort with 30,000 miles
The whining has now gone and no oil leak from the driveshaft. fitted new half shaft seals and all is well
Thanks for the help steve
I have also taken the old diff to peices (will post pics later) and it feels as if the two bearings on the half shaft sides are worn. they wobble a bit and some of the rollers are pitted and burred and they make a bit of a grinding side when rotated. So, going to get new bearings and see if i can recondition the diff. everything else is in very good condition Duncan

car is currently on about 137K and I guess it started doing it about 6 months ago - so around 125-130k miles.
its not noticable around town just at high speeds when under load.
looks like the bearings are worn and wobbling around a bit.
I might have a recon diff available in a few weeks Duncan

this is the bearing that is quite loose. it looks a bit tarnished as well so probably been getting quite hot.

these pictures were taken before I cleaned the parts up properly. The parts are now all cleaned up and bathing provocatively in diff oil untill i can take them to bearing shop and see If I can get some replacement bearingsDuncan

Hi discodun
glad you got it changed and your 2nd hand one worked out ok
I would say you have been lucky or i have the look of a dog
I have had 4 d3s and a rrs. I imported most of them from the US when $ was 50p.
3 of the D3s and diff issues and the sport also.
1st D3 - had covered 24K miles. full service history. I drove it for 1k all well. Lent car to my inlaws who went to germany in it and when it came back he said there was an odd noise - like the back brakes were stuck on.
After some checking up with dealer - car was under warranty - i was told it was tyres. 2k later front and back whining terrible. Finally they drained oil in diffs and said there was sign of water - rear diff needed changing but not on warranty! they accused me of taking the car off road! I changed rear after buying recon from guy salmon leeds and all ok but front one carried on whining so i sold.
next one had a whining slightly front diff - they checked it found oil leak replaced seal and it was better - sold it a few months later that had covered only 37k
Sport 29k driving from docks i heard a funny noise - sounded like a lose screw in the diff. or ball bearings rattling around. got home took car to dealers and after some discussion with LR asking to see service history (odd as LR have a computerised system thats global so they could see for themselves but why make life easy and honour warranty claims too easily) a week later they replaced both the front and rear diff.
I still have the sport and now its on 43k and sounding sweet
Bought another d3 brand new and after 5k a slight noise is developing in the front diff - so its only a matter of time before that needs changing.
my point being all LR diffs seem crap - how can this be - i dont think they are fit for purpose
And 2 - a low mileage bargain diff might turn out to be a knackered one.
I did chose to replace the diff oil - which LR say is not due until 70-80k from memory and added some molyslip to try and stop them getting worse. will add this to the RRS also next time it goes in for service
LR did a TB to say that some diffs around 2006/2007 VIN range had contaminated oil and if used it would kill diffs. most it claimed were caught at dealers - my vins were outside the range but something fishy going on. And who would think it CAT make them i thought!

I disagree, mines done 137,000 miles, and been used extensively offroad, so ALL LR diffs cant be crap Duncan

Given the number of posts about diffs sounds like you are one of the lucky ones.
I had an old p38 dad defender brother d2s and none had the issues that the d3 seems to have.
4/5 cars with low miles seem to be pretty good basis to say SEEM to be crap
I have never had an issue with EPB on the cars but many others have
Has there ever been a diff survey?

ive never had EPB issues either
I have had 3 starter motors/solenoids, so starters must be a common failure point
there are about 16000 people registered on the forum and I cant say that many have experienced diff failures. may be worth a poll as you say, but its always the issues that get posted not what hasnt gone wrong.Duncan

I took the diff down to my friendly garage today (friendly cos ive spent loadsa money with them over the years ).
They took the bearings out the sides (whatever thats called) - they were well kanckered !! but are struggling to release the pinion shaft to repalce the oil seal.
They are having to make up a tool as the shaft and flange are solid. they reckon they can release it ok without effecting the collapsible bearing etc and can just replace the oil seal as that bearing seems fine
I took the side bearing off to BRT Bearings in Bristol. They matched them up exactly and had both in stock
Big to BRT, they where very helpful considering they dont usually deal direct with joe public.
£62 for the two.
So once the drive shaft oil seal is replaced and the two bearing installed I should have a good working recon diff.
Not as good as an LR recon diff, but then it wont sell for £700 and might whine a little, but will be mechanically sound
£350 if anyone wants it p/x - i'll RUN it up on the bench first before I sell it so it can be heard running Duncan
