Anyone good at paint spraying?

I'm (trying to) fix the rust in the nearside roofrail channel at the front; the rust is worse than first thought and has crept up the sides with some on the top, so the repair will be seen.

What I want to know is, for the topcoat what is the best way of spraying? Mask up so I get hard edges then try to wet and dry then compound back, or not to mask but overspray and try to compound the overspray later?

I cant find much information about this on the 'net.

I could of course have it done professionally, one company said they would have to spray the roof up to the step up and hopefully blend it in. But that's £££ and I have a new compressor on the way, a scratch on the bonnet, a 7yr service soon... Sad

Try to paint up to a seam but if that would be too far fade it out
Some neat thinners on the last coat can help save a lot of compounding

A seam would be much to far away, when you say fade it out do you mean dont use any masking tape, just spray onto the uncovered paintwork? What worries me is that the spray is a different shade than the car, although it is the correct LR colour.

Give the car where you want to spray a compound first it may just come back to being the same colour if not you will have to adjust your paint with tinters to deal with the fade on your paint
But yes you will need to loose the edge somewhere you cannot paint to a masked edge in the middle of a pannel and not have a ridge

Roll the tape backwards on itself? I hadn't thought of that
