cv boot failure

Had a look under the car whilst changing tyres to off road stt's and noticed grease sprayed around the rear right brake components and wheel arch. A little grease goes a long way! Cant' see a split but seems to be coming from around the outer rubber clip area. Cars only done 25000kms; is this a known issue and I wonder if anyone on GTR can confirm whether the fix is a complete new shaft? Very Happy

Wanted to go upto Cooktown tomorrow but now a bit concerned with river crossings an almost certainty, but if the fix is a whole new shaft then why not?

Happy new year to all who use this great site Smile

Hi Catweasel
Here is a picture

I have heard they want to replace the boot and not the shaft. Just as well I found it early. As you can see no gaping tear for crude to get in, only a loss of grease so i imagine a repair will be suffecient dont you think

I'm no expert ( they'll be along later) but I had something similar on a front wheel drive 323 I have and they replaced a boot, but a few short months later I had to have the shaft replaced due to excessive wear without the grease. I think that they should inspect the joint prior to making any assesment and take it from there, it may be ok.

I think you should insist on a new joint. AndrewS on this forum had a CV joint fail last month, although it was a front one.

Thanks Gareth
My first thought was the same. However, is the dealer not expected to follow the GTR recommended fix? Does anyone know what GTR says about this?

Cheers

GTR says nothing about this ( i.e. it's not a common premature failure)
It's down to the local dealer to determine the best (cost effective) repair, bearing in mind that they have to be able to justify this to LR to recover the costs under warranty

Yeah I see
I think I will have a hard time arguing that a new joint will be cheaper than repairing, but I will try

not that I can see
Grease has been deposited in a narrow arc. Covered brake hoses though

the key to it is proving (or 'reasonable doubt') that contamination of the CV joint didn't happen - ask the dealer what the expected lifespan is - they will no doubt eventually give you some spurious figure of somewhere around 250,000km, ask them to individually warrant the repair to that point - which, if there is no contamination, shouldn't be a problem. Don't take any guff about manufacturers warranty, the repair shouldn't compromise the components expected lifespan....
If there is a split in the CV boot, TBH it should be OK, if it's a tear then contamination is likely...
