Battery Voltage

Anyone know what the acceptable voltage range is for the D3 TDV6 (HSE) battery? I have been having various error messages at start up & starting the engine has been a struggle - a plug in bluetooth unit gave a hint as to the problem when it showed a low voltage warning, but even with all accessories etc switched off the problem remains. Temperature has been around minus 5C here though. I have a voltmeter currently attached to the battery with plug in cables to allow it to be plugged in & out without touching the car & it is showing some apparently low voltage.
Also, although I can't get to the manual in the car without unlocking which will probably cause a voltage drop & spoil the monitoring, I recall that there were 2 different battery specs available (?) - would be interested to know what rating other members' batteries are.

Hi Ecosse, I think TFC will know for sure, but I suspect if its dropping below 12v when the car is stood doing nothing then the battery is u/s. I believe that Land Rover are aware of some faulty batteries.

Why don't you give LR Asssist a call, tell them its going flat all by itself. I accidently flattened my battery a few months back, and the LRA engineer told me that there had been a number of cases of duff batteries.

Or maybe she just needs good run. Mine gave me a load of errors yesterday when I started it up to swap the cars on the drive around, it has not had a good run for a few days now.

Battery should be putting out between 13.8 and 13.4 volts, any less than that and it needs a top-up charge or is duff.

dependent upon temperature, the vehicle battery should be >11.8 VDC with no load and any surface charge removed, anything less than 10.5 VDC under cranking indicates a discharged or faulty battery and will induce 'errors' in the vehicle subsystems
Minimum charge voltage is 14.2VDC, Maximum is 15.6VDC both are temperature and load dependent (load can include recharging the battery) anything outside of this range indicates a defective charging circuit or drive belt - note that the charging circuit includes the electrical connection and in the case of the D3, the engine control unit and the ATCU.
low state of charge is not always cause by a 'fault' but can also be the result of cumulative discharge.... it take approximately 7 miles of diving with engine revs >1500rpm to replace the charge consumed by starting the engine Wink

Surprised I've not had problems - my daily journey's usually only 7.5 miles (one-way) with heated seats/air con. Today was the first time it failed to start on the first turn of the key...

Wink Like I said, it's cumulative, you're probably just about topping it back up although one it's discharged to a point where problems start to happen, only a bench charge will recover the battery Shocked

heated seats and aircon on? laziness like me I guess - I have the aircon on permanently (probably explains the sh*t mpg) and use the seats on cold mornings

My ac is on permanently but as it's climate control surely the ac part of it only kicks in when the car thinks things need cooling down Confused

My commute is only about 7 or 8 miles too - on Mondays/Fridays - often its a lot less - so I'm surprised I've not problems too

Will make no difference on or off. D3 designed to run with it on by default (why it does).

Even so - you don't get something for nothing - switching off the aircon WILL improve the MPG - even by a teeny teeny bit

I have been keeping the 'Econ' function on for a couple of weeks now. Main reason is the ac is getting noisy (dealer disagrees, but thats for another time), and econ calms it down.

I have not noticed a big difference in mpg.

It's important to use the aircon at least a few times a week to prevent mould growth ....so I understand Confused
