Am I correct in thinking that the D4 has no dipstick and the oil change is done from the top via a vacume system through the tube at the front O/S of the engine? If so how do you check the oil and also drain the engine assuming no drain plug?

The LR plan is you don't worry about such menial things and get the dealer to do it in exchange for pieces of currency.

Many thanks Wiggs and DSL, just thought the oil change idea was another ploy for LR to rip you off. They may not have thought of that yet, there's still time lol

I wonder how reliable the electronic gauge is.
I check mine once a week and in the 10k miles that I've had it, I have never added any oil despite the fact that the level is nearly halfway down the measuring window.
I rang the dealer and asked how much each graduation on the scale represented in oil volume and he didn't know. He said that when it needs oil it will flash a warning light in good time. As long as the check reports "OK" there's no need to worry. Mine has consistently reported "OK" so I'm going with that for the time being.
It sounds a bit iffy but that may be because I am used to a physical dipstick and topping with oil to the line.
Any ideas out there?

When it gets to the point of needing a top up, the screen tells you how much to put in. I actually prefer this to the dip stick because it takes away that desire to top up to the line all the time!

Yeah Crews true, but old die hard here would prefer to see oil on a dipstick. Had the electronic level on my Vito van but also had a dipstick so always checked that. Guess I will be forced to give way to progress!!!!!

No matter what electronic gizmos it has, the big ends will still rattle when it is out of oil. A vaccine does not stop you catching a virus, or passing it on, or getting ill from it, really ill. It does reduce the likelyhood of you dying when really, really ill. Stay Alive - KEEP AWAY FROM PEOPLE.

But by that time it's too late to worry about topping up with a bit of oil, I assume.

When I picked my D4 up last week the dealer said that there was no drain plug. I haven't bothered to look underneath to check this, and probably won't. I never put a spanner on the D3 and don't plan to on the D4 8)
