So, here is a story that maybe someone can help with?
I had the rear disks and pads replaced the other week. When I drove it home, on one piece of road between 55mph and 65, there was a significant vibration in the car. Not from the steering wheel but the whole car. Obviously, I thought something was wrong so I came off at the next junction and turned round to go straight back. However, same speed on the other carriageway, there was no vibration. I thought that maybe something was just bedding in and cam off at the next junction again to go home. (didn't go back to the garage in the end). Driving the original piece of road for the 2nd time, everything seemed fine so I went home and everything was fine. I just put it down to the brakes bedding in.
Everything was fine until the weekend when it happened again. However, when I got home, there was a significant smell of burning from the right rear wheel. Also there is some discoloration of the metal where the disk meets the wheel. (sorry for the non-techy description but the bit that runs horizontally behind the wheel that was obviously replaced with the new disks - probably the disk!?) This discoloration is only evident on the right rear - not the left rear which was replaced at the same time. The vibration does not occur all the time; it has only happened twice in as many weeks although I haven't driven it much to be honest!
So, has anyone any idea what this could be? Could the brakes on the right rear be intermittently binding? (is that even possible?)
I've got it booked into the garage again in the morning but I hoped that the collective might be able to arm me with some pearls of wisdom so I don't get fobbed off?

Yep, sounds like binding caliper or EPB. Happens on D3, no reason why not on D4s.

Thanks for the quick reply.
So is this likely to be down to something they did (or didn't do) when the brakes were replaced or am I likely to just get sucking of teeth and another bill tomorrow?
Do they do anything with the EPB when the rear brakes are replaced?
God I wish I knew what I was doing with these things! Bri

Don't know, not a techie but had all of my calipers replaced on my D3, two twice, over last few years. Shouldn't it all be under warranty?

If they have replaced the rear disks, they would have had to re-adjust the epb, and this should have been done after performing the bedding in procedure. Ideally they should have also stripped and cleaned/lubricated the mechanism. I bet they did not do that, and the shoes are intermittently sticking. Unfortunately, it may have de laminated the park brake shoes and they may need replacing now. Was it a main dealer?

Yep it was a main dealer. Hopefully they'll see me right tomorrow.

Well, the dealer has replaced the disk in question. They also stipped the brakes down and ensured that everything was as it should be (including checking the shoes for delamination). They've sent the offending disk back to Landrover Parts apparently as they think it could have been a faulty part due to the specific marks on the disk.
Excellent service from the dealer. Friendly and helpful.
So I'm a happy bunny again! 8) Bri
