Jacking up and suspension collapse

This may have been covered before but I can find it Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes

a bloke in the tyre garage told me today that when they jack up D3's they have to keep the tailgate open or the suspension will collapse Shocked Shocked

I guess its something to do with keeping the compressor active or something like that. Is he talking out of his Exclamation Exclamation , or is he jacking the vehicle in the wrong way. I assumed at the time he was jacking from the jack point but it makes me wonder if hes jacking the suspension.

anyone heard of this ??

Yeah i've hear this one a local garage said the same thing to me plus he put my hazzards on and I looked at him daft.

They used a trolly jack and jacked it up almost where the standard jack would go.

I think their are talking out of their ****

my guy just trolley jacks under the suspension leg so the car doesnt know its off the ground..

the suspension shouldn't colapse as such, by jacking it, it thinks that it has grounded and will go into extended off road height (if there is enough air in the tanks) it will however drop a touch to make sure it is actually stuck, having the boot or a door open would meen that the susp would'nt move.

Stick it in off road height, switch off and pull the key out then jack from the normal points on the chassis. No local garage 'hocus pocus' needed Very Happy

I witnessed what happens first hand yesterday. When the truck was raised incorrectly the suspension went extended then down then up... - like it was trying to find ground. What you are supposed to do is, put it in low range, then raise the suspension to off-road height & lock the steering before lifting.
 I'm not so good at giving advice...may I offer you a sarcastic comment instead?

Off-road height is all that's needed, low range isn't going to have any affect on the the suspension nor is the steering lock The End

Hmmm, sticking it in low range and engaging the steering lock I presume is just to reduce the chance of it rolling off the jack which shouldn't be an issue if the wheels are properly chocked

Ya that would make sense. I think the manual instructions are for changing a flat on the ground...but I think my disco scared them and they followed step by step Laughing
