Don't think it's illegal to fit a run stop ... It is an offence to leave a vehicle running when your not there though !!

Ah yes, I recall that now you mention it

runlock

Hi all
It is as wiggs says you are not allowed to leave a vehicle running unattended but there fore it would be illegal to do this there is no reason that a vehicle owned by a member of the public would need to have this device unless the vehicle needs in the course of someone's work. It however would invalidate any insurance claim should someone manage to steal it as the keys would be in the vehicle so bear that in mind.
If you really need one then I can sell you one if its for your response work
cheers

The keys are not in the car ... That's the idea of the run stop unit

I use an inverter in mine and for long periods I would have the engine running .

Do your run stop units cater for keyless start / entry cars ?

So the keyless set-up obviates the need for a run-stop altogether by using Amizing's technique. Excellent! Thumbs Up

And the key is not left in the vehicle so the insurance could not claim that, it would be in your pocket. Is it keys left in or engine left running that insurance cares about (or both)?

As for the law, it may be illegal to leave a car with engine running unattended on a highway, but what about on private ground?

runlock

Hi wiggs
I see you spotted my blunder about the keys being left in the ignition thats very true they would be in your pocket Embarassed not in the car thats the whole point of the runlock system.

I have done some digging around and there is a new unit that has just appeared on the market for vehicles with keyless entry, it isnt a normal runlock system there a few differences so Im being told.

The unit was only available for OE manufacturers for their specialist vehicle departments but Ive done a bit of digging around and I can get them.
The downside is the price £325 +vat they are fully canbus compatible I am awaiting full details to be sent to me later on.
There is a few different units available one I thought was particularly good was the ECO version which turns the car off and on when it senses that the battery is getting low on power, thus saving you about a litre of fuel an hour.

As for leaving the vehicle running on private ground I dont think there would be an issue there, only on the public highway.
cheers

Correct, same as on private land you dont need insurance, tax, MOT etc and anyone can drive a vehicle regardless of age, driving licence, drunk, etc. Its only on the public highway that the Road Traffic Act comes into play Thumbs Up

Wiggs, can you not wire up a second plip to the internal door lock buttons that will press the lock button for you when you get out and press the unlock button when you want to get back in ?

It was something I was going to look at when I had my D4 but didnt get round to playing so didnt ever test it with the key out of the car but sat in it pressing the buttons manually as the start of the tests to see if it would possibily work.

Using a third button on a seperate plip it could be easly wired to the stop/start button to switch it off if the need arose while it was locked.

I recon if you can manualy use the lock and unlock button without the key in the car while the engine is running a few bits and bobs and a maplin rf plip kit could do the trick.

Pete
