maybe a strange question but does anyone know the thread of the captive nuts into which the bolts go holding the electric socket into position next to the tow bar?

If there is a B&Q local to you, perhaps trying the screw in to the nuts they have on sale may help. Halfords also sell the set of 3 screws on the towing equipment section if you don't have any.
