Warning: Wheel Brace Issue

Whilst changing my wheels today, the wheel brace broke, see pics below. I went down to my local tyre outfit, who changed them over for me, then off to LR to get the brace changed.

No issues, but they did not have one in stock so I was given one from the showroom model.

The brace has been changed and has a new part number KAL000024 C97XA. Old one had a 23 instead of 24. Sounds like I'm not alone in this problem and a stronger brace has been put in place.

I thought it worthy of pointing out on here, as someone may get a sore one if it lets go like mine did. Needless to say I now have a 24" breaker bar and 22mm socket in the car

Dunce here Confused Is that also the handle part, used to wind up\ down the jack ?

Thanks for the heads up John!
Sounds like you had a narrow escape.
I also use a bar and socket to undo the nuts now and have also gone over to a 3T trolley jack for when I am at home.
I use a torque wrench to tighten the nuts, the correct tightness feels like a lot less than you would do by tightening until 'you think' they are tight.

May sound daft, but it feels heavier. Visually no noticable change apart from the '23' is now a '24' stamped on the handle.

I had the car jacked up when this happened, just enough to take the weight till I undone the bolts. Getting the jack unwound with the handle broken was a bit tedious.

I've a 2t trolley jack, but it did not have enough reach to lift the car. Time to invest in a proper jack......or maybe an air-bag Very Happy

Maybe the '23' to '24' is because the supplier/manufacturer has changed, rather than the design.

Possibly.

The only explanation the parts guy offered was that it was obvioulsy an upgraded part.

As I said above, I only posted to share a bit of news that happened and hopefully keep someone safer when trying to undo tighter wheels nuts.

I changed my wheels over yesterday, to get ready for tomorrows off-roading and my wheel brace broke soon after the third wheel change. At first it started to bend and then the pin sheared.
I have straightened it up in a vice and replaced the pin with a larger bolt. The big washers will provide the extra support on the sides to stop it bending again.



When the car is next in at the dealers, I'll see if they can get me a replacement under warranty, as the more LR replace, the sooner they will realise they have a problem with these.

So others owners be aware, that the LR wheel brace is only good for changing a few wheels. Once it has had some use, consider keeping a socket & bar in the car, as the LR brace may break on you. Mine started to bend on the 5th wheel change and then completely broke on the 7th.

My brace is part no. KAL000024 G97XA, so is is clear that this isn't any better or different to part no. 23.

Matt, are you tightening the nuts to the correct torque?

They are actually quite easy to undo at that pressure.

Not saying you are being heavy handed, just a thought.

Possibly am being too heavy handed, but even so, the tool shouldn't break before my arm!!
I've not read what the torque should be.

Well guess what! Changing wheels today & broke the wheel brace. D3Matt & jkp was yours replaced under warranty?? Has anyone found an alternative? Seems easy to get a 23mm heavy duty wheel brace but not 22mm. Evil or Very Mad

The standard wheel brace really is a cheap and nasty piece of kit - so I keep a 1/2" drive socket and a good quality (Britool) powerbar in my D3 for wheel changing duties. The last thing any of us want is to break the wheel brace on the side of the road while trying to change a flat in the rain!!
