Please help folks. This is driving me insane and seems to have baffled dealer and specialist.
The car (TDV6) has an engine knocking/ diesel knock sound when under load in drive. It seems to be worse when the car is cold but is still there when warm to varying degrees - sometimes only just audible.
When accelerating in reverse (say uphill to demonstrate max load) there is no sign of the sound and the engine sounds as it should. In neutral there there's no noise when reving.
Normally such a smooth sounding TDV6, it is ruining the car for me - I now don't enjoy using it.
Could it be related to the Torque converter - would that explain why the sound is not there in reverse?
This all started immediately following a trip to the dealer for a new EGR valve and was immediately noticable from that moment. Of course they claim that there could be no connection, but it seems like too much of a coincidence to me.

Hi sometimes when egr valve replaced one of the little sound pads gets left off on the left of engine as you look at it

Thanks but checked that. Its more than that - I'd like to know why the sound is only there under load and not in reverse. MPG is also down at early 20s.

Might be worth checking that the plastic covers are all clipped in and screwed down properly, including the battery box and cover. I once got my car back with the engine cover loose and it made a proper racket!

This is definitely a mechanical sound which is louder the more load the engine is under when in Drvie. Its like a Diesel knock sound and isn't the injectors as I've had 2 already replaced having been told this might be the problem - £600 later and no change.

Ok, next idea would be to ask if anything is fouling on the chassis or body? When you drive forward under power, the gearbox/engine unit will flex on its mountings slightly and move in the opposite direction to the propshaft. This could be pushing a component into contact with something solid, and making the noise. In reverse, the engine will tend to lean the other way because the propshaft is turning the other way, so the contact point will be released.
Any other ideas, apart from a failed big end?

Hope not failed big end - its not as "knocky" as that I don't think. Car has done 65k by the way so should have plenty of life in it.

Reverse is a lower gear than first. What happens if you go into low range? Does it then appear in forward gears as well? A vaccine does not stop you catching a virus, or passing it on, or getting ill from it, really ill. It does reduce the likelyhood of you dying when really, really ill. Could it be cam related, had a similar issue once on a ford OHC MY17 D5 1st Edition Namib Orange

It only does appear in forward gears not reverse. Also happens in low ratio.
Doesn't do it in neutral or park - can be brought on by selecting drive with foot on foot brake and applying throttle.

I might sound like I really have no clue or am simply brilliant.
Don't even know if it is in the car, but anyways here it goes.
A diesel Transit developed a sound similar to this, and it was the flywheel.
Or, someone dropped something into the open areas when doing the EGR.

Thanks to all for ideas - any further thoughts on suggestions/ new ideas? What is odd is that sometimes the noise seems to go away altogether (most of the time not). This seems to happen when the car has been on 2 or 3 journeys and is left for a bit and then re-started. Why would that be?
