disco 3 propshaft cv joint...

oops!...can any one help !,ive taken my propshaft apart to replce the center bearing, all straight forward except for putting back together,it looks like the cv joint has to go back a specific way, every combination i try ends up giving no movement in the joint what so ever, there is deffinatly a combintion, but as i was crap at the rubiks cube,i now need to cheat..any ideas?

is this just a straightforward propshaft ?

with two Universal Joints & a telescopic splined shaft between ?

usually these are marked on the splined shaft part so you get them aligned...if the UJ's arent in the correct alignment you will get non uniform motion when the jointed shat is articulated.
If you can mail me a photo to show what you have I can sketch out how it goes back

strictly speaking a Prop shaft with two UJ's isn't the same as a Rzeppa CV joint
 BREXIT - done properly.

thanks for that bl,this has a uj at the rear, telescopic splined shaft in the middle and a rubber mounted cv joint at the front, the problem area is the large cv joint just after the center bearing housing....im off to try again now,wll try to take some pics..

Me too - I have been told by 2 propshaft rebuild companies that it is not viable to replace the centre bearing on these props

prop cv joint

Shocked ...right,this is a long one, firstly thanks to all who gave advice, ill try to do some pics soon to help and ill put a rundown of what ive done today to accompany them. The prop shaft on a d3 has a center cv joint as you all know,so briefly, when you remove this joint and its ball bearings it has many combinations when it comes to replacing it,most positions will give no movement at all,3 however will give some, one of these will give you the best movement, like i say,ill do pics to help with this as its a real tryer of patience.the center bearing however, knocked off, again, ill post pics to show the sequence...

cv prop

if anyone is interested northwest props(chorley and manchester) will modify your prop by removing the center bearing and cv joint and replce them with a good old universal joint, keep it well greased and it will last lifetime, its pricey though..£350.A prop from landrover will cost 275 plus vat. This is a common mod on touregs and cayannes(but a replcement prop is 700)

Hello armslingdaz

I had exactly the same problem when I tried to change my centre bearing - couldn't get the bl**dy thing to articulate whichever way i tried to re-assemble it. Eventually gave up and bought a new prop from TLO.

I have subsequently been told by various sources that even if you can get it back together, getting a good seal between the two halves of the bearing cover is impossible and you would have ended up with all the grease being forced out under centifugal force with the likely consequence of a catastrophic failure of the propshaft at high rotational speed.

Hi
New to the Forum

Would be interested to see the Propshaft UJ assembly pics mentioned in this thread as I have the same problem having just had the centre support bearing replaced the CV joint hardly articulates at all.

Due to having no posts I cannot access them yet.

Also having problems with the amber brake warning light on the dash coming on and unsure why.

If we're talking about the prop shaft that's shown in Martin's drawing then I had mine replaced last week by my LR indie due to the centre support wearing. Apparently the entire prop shaft whole should be replaced, or it must be done in the factory

Thanks
My garage have replaced the support bearing which was shot to pieces but they said that the CV is very inflexible. Don't know whether they dismantled the CV joint to do it or not. If so it may be reassembled wrong.
Ill probably end up changing the prop by the sound of it.

It turned out to be the CV joint seized up in a not straight position. My garage Split it put it in the vice metal cup side facing up and filled the cup with oil. After a weekend soaking it freed up. Refilled with grease and refitted it and it's fine now touch wood. He fitted the new centre support bearing by removing the CV which is held together with a clip.
