Just to bring this back up again, If you have your radio, perhaps you could remove yourself from the sign-up. A few went out at the Lakes week-end and were put to some good use right away. This offer is on-going for D3 members.....

Picked up 2 Entels from John at the Lakes Trip. Thanks John! Thumbs Up

Haven't used them at home yet but they worked very well on that trip. Noticed major difference between those that had Entels & those that had cheapie radios (like my cheapie that I loaned to Ryan), no crackle with the Entels & a lot easier to understand what is said. Should have bought them in the 1st place! Embarassed Embarassed Embarassed

'scuse the numpty question, but what's the range of these things, and does it differ between cheapies and "proper" ones?

A question I get asked every day about all kinds of radios. Answer is the same as the length of a piece of string Shocked

1. You generally get what you pay for.
2. If its £19.99 and says 7 mile range then it should say "yards" rather "miles"
3. In open country, a radio such as the HT446 can achieve a few miles.
4. The more obstacles in the way of the signal, the less it travels
5. City centre performance can be measured in streets (3 or 4)
6. Antenna is the most important part of the system (like tyres on a car)

Best distance achieved with a licence free radio is over 200 miles Shocked

Worst is probably a couple of floors in a busy office block.

Go figure Wink

Looks like a great radio, JMC, but I am looking for a unit that can do both PMR and LPD. I do a bit of paragliding and our local club uses both PMR and LPD for communications.
The rugged and submersible casing of the Entel is a big plus because the radio gets rough treatment now and then Shocked
Does Entel offer a combined PMR/LPD unit?

Nope, it seems to be a European thing:

And apparently even available in the UK: Laughing

But not the same quality as the Entel devices Crying or Very sad

Rolling Eyes I have an LPD to open my Disco3, and my garage door. I certainly wouldn't want to rely on 10mW of power to communicate effectively. May be fine as a baby monitor though Confused

The PMR446 radios have 500mW of power and most people in the UK still don't think that's enough. Ebay is full of (illegal) business radios with 4w power on the 446Mhz band. Somehow, I don't think LPD will take off here and I doubt if anyone will be following the model you mention as they are more of a gimick than a trendsetter. Wink
