Flinders Ranges at Easter

Hi all!

Hoping to draw on the collective brainpower and past experiences of previous trips to the Flinders Ranges. Having seen it on tv recently am feeling inspired to do another roadtrip, our last one was Fraser and it was great fun.

1) we are considering Easter this year - have 10/11 days available to do it from Sydney including getting there ( is that enough?)
2) likely weather / track conditions
3) how much 4wd can be done by ourselves before needing the safety of a tag-along convoy for more remote areas
4)good tagalong operators in the area
3)Is it essential to bush camp the whole time or can B&B's, homesteads etc fit well with itinaries

That's all for now..... Smile

Huge choice - would need a book to supply all the options, so I suggest obtaining a copy of Ron & Viv Moon's book "The Flinders Ranges - An Adventurer's Guide". I have used this book as a guide for years for travel into the Flinders.

You might want to have a look at the Landrover event held in Blinman and factor that in to the trip.

Flinders Trip

Hi Dukemasterpro.

Unfortunately the Flinders at Easter time is a bit like George St without the bitumen. There are many cmaping options, but these days in peak times we tend to camp on the stations and pay for the priviledge. We were at Willow Creek station Easter 2009, many options and it's a great way to get away. You can google it and you'll find a range of other stations that now provide camp sites on their properties. Some even have the option of flush loos and showers. The alternative is you are likely to find yourself cramped in to a public campsite in the NAtional parks. They are much more regulated than they were a few years ago - you can'y just camp anywhere these days (unfortunately).

There is no 4wd'g in the area that is so extreme you need 'tag along'. There are lots of great tracks opened up by the property owners, Skytrek, Oratunga Track, etc. Once again google them and you'll get the idea. All of them can be done without raising a sweat in a Disco. BTW the vehicles on the Landrover Jamboree were heading onto Skytrek past our campsite on WIllow Creek Station when we were there in 2009. A great collection of all sorts of Landrovers - quite a sight.

The Flinders will be magic this year, there has been lots of rain and everything should be very green. Not so much that it should cause any problems though.

Cheers,
Martin

back a little earlier than planned - see the details on my post in 'keeping the suspension up'

Flinders were a dream - weather was perfect.
Stayed at Burra on the way and then at Rawnsley Park for 3 nights. Great accommodation and very central.
Did the Bunyaroo Valley and Brachina Gorge - spectacular. spent 8 hours on Skytreck (on Willow ck station) which was the highlight of this trip. Apparently there are even better day and half day self drives on private property up there which we'll investigate next trip.
Whatever you do - wherever you go - its all fantastic.
just get out and do it.

to answer dukemasterpro questions
1/ we live near the Vic/Nsw border we allowed 2 days travel each way (fullish days but doable without undue stress on the Bride)
we allowed 8-9 days as time was limited - but had to return home early after just 5 days - overall 7 days. Yes it was a bit short but still worth the trip 10-11 would be great.
2/weather was picture perfect - coolish nights and warm, not hot days mostly with cool breeze
3/you don't need ANY tagalong tours
4/we stayed entirely in powerd caravan park type accommodation - even the private stations now have this facility. Rawnsley Park was great - but you've left your run too late for Easter so as suggested Google and contact some of the stations and see what is still available. Try Willow Ck Station - lots of flush loo's and brand new big camp kitchen. Don't wait till you get there!

Very excited to be actually doing the trip this year, camper trailer booked so much easier to do the 1 night stops on the way. Willow Ck for 2 nights then Rawnsley for 5 and plan to do "day trips" from each location and some walking / bike riding to avoid piling on the road trip induced kg's. Laughing

All the Flinders are spectacular but do not miss the Brachina Gorge or Parachilna Gorge and make the loop through Blinman. The trip is well worth it as I did it a few years back. I certainly intend to do it again with my wife. Previously it was a day off from work in Leigh Creek.
