Does anyone have experience of fitting a battery isolator. I have picked up the comments about making sure the vehcle goes to "sleep" before disconecting the battery. Wondered if any others issues might raise their head!

Why do you want to fit an Isolator ??
I wouldnt think that it is a good idea, many of the D3's systems require the power to be on to retain memorys and stuff, your remote unlock won't work for example. CLUB "Ah Shor it'll be grand"

you would be better off fitting a second battery.
Thats what I've done with my D3

There is a transit relay fitted pre-delivery to isolate the battery (along with a software 'transit mode') but you will have to use the key to unlock the vehicle and the alarm will be inoperative - assuming the isolator has a minimum of 120 seconds delay...
Some of the vehicle systems require permanent power to operate correctly, removing power will cause erroneous DTC's to be stored and may cause errors to be displayed.
It may make sense to fit a parallel battery or an external charging socket

Thanks for the replies on this one chaps, the issue is that the vehicle will be locked up inside for a number of months at a time and I would not want to leave it on an unattended trickle charge for any lenght of time. will look at the additional battery idea and maybe activate the transit mode.
Thanks again.

in that case, just take the battery out and leave it somewhere warm-ish, transit mode can only be invoked by the dealers

There was an article in LRM this month (January) on this issue (p189) that raved about a small unit from Draper...

Now, I know NOTHING about it but the article was very positive... I don't know if it would screw up any of the the D3 electrics... (TFC?) "Funny, mine doesn't do that......."

it's only rated at 12 volt output - a battery needs higher (up to 15.6V in the case of a D3) to charge, the best that could be achieved is that the alarm will run on the 400mA output...

What about the ctek charger/conditioners, they are supposed to be great. I know someone who uses it on their DB9 as these flatten the battery in 3 weeks DS3 TDV6 HSE - Silver with Alpaca (old one) Gone

Hi dodger, it’s always a bit of a dilemma leaving a vehicle unused for months at a time.
Isolating the battery or removing the battery is not the answer, the battery will still go flat when leaving it for more than a month or so
Even if the battery still has enough power to start the vehicle after such along period, there’s still a good chance that the battery’s life span will be degraded.
There is no real drama with leaving a battery on a trickle charger for long periods. Over here, many farmers leave ag vehicles powered like this for months at a time and I’ve not heard of any problems.
As to that trickle charger, I think, by the way they have listed the output voltage, that it uses the battery’s internal voltage as a form of crude but effective regulator, so it would actually be about 250ma at 13.5 volts.
This is heaps for keeping a battery trickle charged.
If you don’t like the idea of have a transformer powered up all the time then another alternative would be to fit a solar trickle charger.
In your situation, fitting a second battery wouldn’t really solve the problem.
