road tolls in Portugal.

SWMBO and I are taking the caravan to Spain and Portugal later this year. Does anyone know if you can buy, in the UK, the electronic tags for the Portugese Roads? I have read that there can be long delays at the border, up to an hour. Do you need a tag for car and caravan as in Switzerland?

Hi Thub,

No you can not buy electronic tags for Portual outside, even in Portugal you need a fiscal number( tax number) Portual address. Yes you need a tax tag for both the car and caravan, these you can get online and are valid for a year.

Cheers

Sean

I'm driving down to Algarve again in a few weeks so if there is any difference I'll post

Don't know about buying a tag but I have driven to portugal a couple of times and had no delay at the border just drive through not even maned anymore and the route I took did not use toll roads until over the other side
Had very little ques at the toll booths as well
If you can't buy here but can buy in advance I can get my mum to post 1 over she lives over there

1 thing I do know is that the motorway along the south coast forgot name has turned into a toll road and I think it is tag only it's just happened and details were sketchy all those that live there recon it could be the nail in the coffin for algarve tourist industry

The toll roads in portugal are good but expensive and quite often there are equally good roads running along Side and hoping on and off the toll road is quite a good money saver If you know where

Also in Portugal you'll be paying a higher level if charges compared with "normal" cars. Can't remember what the height is, but ISTR it's bonnet height that counts. This was when I was there good number of years ago, might have changed now.

Algarve toll road is A22 and yes class 2 for a disco, the wait I believe is for the Swiss boarder.

I was there in december and no delays at the border.
You do need to get the electronic tags, ask the border control.
The disco is class 2 wich means that youpay almost double of what a normal eurobox pays.
I spent about 100€. just in toll roads.

PM sent
