AT2 tyres use 20% MORE fuel

Have had AT2 tyres 255/60/18 on my D3 for 15,000 miles and averaged 27.7 mpg by the on board computer, did brakes and put on summer continental 235/70/17 tyres, over the last week and a long drive to France today now averaging 34.4mpg Shocked I always thought I was losing 10% but shocked that the fatter chunkier AT2's have been costing me 20% loss of fuel.

I thought we were through winter hence putting on the Continentals but sods law I am facing treacherous weather tonight and tomorrow, I have used them before in deep snow and they performed well, so let's see Thumbs Up

So there you have it, if you want to save a massive 20% on fuel consumption get Continentals on 17" rims, my vehicle is a manual by the way!

So how do you know your brakes weren't dragging and causing the difference?

If they really were 255/55/18 that wouldn't help.

Edit... should have gone to specsavers .. scratch that bit Embarassed

I found about a 2mpg penalty, dropping from 32 on scorpions to 30 on AT2's. However, this was cancelled out by raising the pressures a couple of psi.

On the other hand, the AT2's were cheaper than scorpions and lasted a lot longer. Some you win, some you lose!

ANY tyre with an un-road bias tread pattern with have an effect on fuel usage. Your driving a three ton brick get over it .

The trade off for having a "Pretty" tyre that looks hard Rolling with laughter will be higher usage some people will see lots some wont to many factors

The newer "AT" tyre has a more sympathetic pattern to comply with new regs the plus side is its a little better on economy where as the AT2 has a more traditional ALL TERRAIN look

The Pirelli ATR is a great ALL Terrain Tyre but just does not look "Hard" Rolling with laughter Function over Form Where as the AT looks in some peoples eyes a more aggressive tyre therefore better as said the trade off is economy if you want this in a D3 (Flawed) the best you can do is fit low rolling resistance tyres strip all extras off and remove all unnecessary weight etc etc etc or buy a boring eurobox like DSL has

You'll be ok if you fit windscreen wipers on the side windows!

Tell me about it, I even have a second set of rims for them. I tried to get that past SWMBO but she said "You have a Disco and a Jazz with winters on, you won't need to be out in the BM in the snow". Rolling Eyes She just doesn't understand the "what if" senario purchasing process. Big Cry Big Cry
