Anyone suffered vibration with GG AT's? |
|
I had a set of GG AT's fitted to my D3 on purchase.
I am experiencing a noticeable vibration from about 58 to 75 mph which makes dual carriageway speeds a bit of a bind.
The car has been back in to Duckworths and run up on the ramp and all the drivetrain is silent and vibe free and with a set of road tyres fitted the car is smooth on the road so the tyres appear to be the issue.
It's only done 300 or so miles since purchase, I'm wondering if anyone else has experienced this vibe?
What pressures are you all running at?
They're 19" by the way.
Cheers all. A common mistake made when trying to come up with a totally foolproof design is to completely underestimate the innate ingenuity of fools.

I have the same tyres without any issue like you have.
I did however have one tyre that required 120grams of weight to balance, I took it back and got them to rotate the tyre and rebalance it. Less than half the weight was required that time.
Make sure they balance the wheels using "Fingers" rather that just using the centre hole for a more accurate result. 2014 SDV6 HSE White, LLAMS Height Controller, Tinted Glass, Tuff Ant Sliders and 18" steel wheels, Safari Snorkel, Rhino Rack Platform, ARB Air Compressor, Custom Drawer and storage unit -http://www.box.com/s/jem0ilac3cner2mexq64 UHF CB, 4x4 Intellegence RWC, 120ltr Long range tank, Rock Sliders and Compressor protection plate Beanie grill, De Tango.

Rich,
The wheels are centred on the D3 hub. Why would balancing using "fingers" be more accurate?

The way it's been explained to me is that the wheel is actually balance as per it's mounted on the vehicle rather than possibly being a fraction out using the centre hole which uses a cone shaped device which maynot be true to the wheel mounting plane. 2014 SDV6 HSE White, LLAMS Height Controller, Tinted Glass, Tuff Ant Sliders and 18" steel wheels, Safari Snorkel, Rhino Rack Platform, ARB Air Compressor, Custom Drawer and storage unit -http://www.box.com/s/jem0ilac3cner2mexq64 UHF CB, 4x4 Intellegence RWC, 120ltr Long range tank, Rock Sliders and Compressor protection plate Beanie grill, De Tango.

D3 is centered on the hub not but the nuts
When you tried the road tyres did they swap the tyres or put wheels on ?
If they put wheels on I'd suggest swaping the tyres on toi those Rims if its gone its the Wheels if its still there its the tyres
18'19's with AT MT tread I'd alway suggest Clip weights as less weight required few other reasons as well

Rich,
That only applies when the wheel is centred on the studs (like my D1), not D3 wheels.

Ah yes but the wheel spins as a result of the mounting plane, not the nuts but the face on the back of the rim. 2014 SDV6 HSE White, LLAMS Height Controller, Tinted Glass, Tuff Ant Sliders and 18" steel wheels, Safari Snorkel, Rhino Rack Platform, ARB Air Compressor, Custom Drawer and storage unit -http://www.box.com/s/jem0ilac3cner2mexq64 UHF CB, 4x4 Intellegence RWC, 120ltr Long range tank, Rock Sliders and Compressor protection plate Beanie grill, De Tango.

Just had a set fitted, and no vibration at all up to 90 mph. Haven't gone faster, but wouldn't anyway in the D3.

I went down this route some years ago and it was a complete waste of time. No one her had any idea what I was talking about. I must have contacted about 10 tyre fitting depots from the biggest chains in the UK to the smallest independant and not one of them had ever heard of this.
I even contacted the manufacture of the balancing equipment who told me to go to Newlife Tyres in Edinburgh as they had the equipment. You've guessed it, they didn't have a clue what I was talking about
Anyway after talking to the Foreman he balanced the wheels normally (BFG All-Terrains) and they were perfect. He said they balanced wheels from a Fiat to a Ferrari and had never used "fingers".
Best bet is to get them balanced again, but watch them being done and make sure they achieve a zero figure on the machine, that way you know they are perfectly balanced.
The larger and more aggresive the tread pattern the harder they are to balance, but it just takes time and a little patience.
