Amendmant to Lighting Regs to cater for Disco3 Lights

Cornering Lamps

Manufacturers have been allowed to fit cornering lamps since Jan 03.

These are white lamps on the front of vehicles, normally rated at 21W. They may even be separate lamps as fitted on the Discovery3, or they may be combined in the same housing with another lamp, say a fog lamp.
In this case they may even use the same bulb as the fog lamp.

The purpose of this type of light is to illuminate the road to the front corner providing increased peripheral vision of the kerb and road surface when the driver intends to turn.
Each lamp operates automatically and is only allowed to activate when all 3 of the following conditions are fulfilled at the same time.

1) When the dipped or main beams are switched on, and
2) Either the direction indicator on the same side is activated or the steering wheel is moved from the straight ahead position in the direction of the turn, and
3) The vehicle speed does not exceed 40kph (25mph approx).

Bend Lighting

Regulations on bend lighting came into effect the same time as those for Cornering Lamps.
This feature is designed to automatically provide enhanced lighting at higher speeds than provided for Cornering Lamps and is an integral part of the headlamp. (Unlike Cornering lamps, the bend lighting must always be contained within the headlamp and cannot be a separate unit).

Bend lighting is the same colour as headlamps (white) and can be either Static or Dynamic.

Static bend lighting comprises an extra bulb at each side within the headlamp housing.

Dynamic bend lighting is where the headlamp can swivel within its housing (Disco3).
Generally, bend lighting can only operate whilst the vehicle is in motion and the steering wheel is turned, however, it may also function when the vehicle is stationary and waiting to make a LEFT turn.

Hopefully this might be of some use to anyone who wants some betime reading Wink
