Lifespan of tyres?

I know there has been plenty of discussion comparing the mileage available from different tyres, but I'm interested in input as to how "old" tyres can be before they hace to realistically be replaced?!
I have a set of winter tyres on spare rims - excellent Vredestein Wintracs which still have adequate tread (just!) after 4-5 winter's use!!, and it occurred to me that as well as the tread depth, there was probably a reasonable lifespan after which, even if not visible, there would be a deterioration in the quality/strength of the rubber?

Five years is recomended max for us to sell a tyre.

If you keep them out of sunlight and as long as they have not perished to much carry on using them. Thumbs Up

I thought with winters they loose their effectiveness at 4-5mm tread, basically when the sipes dissapear. After that, while the rubber might be softer, there is no extra grip on ice etc. Just from what I read a while ago and what I was advised when putting winters on my Jazz. Whistle

You are quite right, forgot the tread depth, got side tracked fitting winter tyres. Rolling with laughter

5mm min, but I am guessing yours are in better shape than that. Thumbs Up

if we have in winter tyres 5mm...we can use them to the end of legal tread in summer. don't waste it because they are winter tyres!

My wintracs

are now 25k miles in & have 60% tread...still awesome...dont aquaplane...arent noisy like some M+S / all weather tyres
/ have worn without being "hollow". They dont appear to have perished rubber on the sidewalls.

I will have to swap in the summer........1st choice the same
