Transfer box recalibration |
|
What does the transfer box ECU recalibration actually do? I thought this just resets the movement limits for selecting high and low ratio?

My car has been doing a similar thing since new year.
I have replaced the front diff and shafts, had my transfer box back out and stripped and inspected, none of that made any difference. Then the car gradually got better and stopped doing it now. No one could get to the bottom of it.

Neron - in the Transfer box there is a clutch pack - the calibration er... calibrates the clutch pack Si

Santacruz: thanks. But does it?
Last week I changed the transfer box oil as a routine maintenance. Took the wagon to the local Independent to have the transfer box clutches recalibrated, following what I read on here. He just laughed and said whilst he was quite happy to take 30 minutes labour time off me he was absolutely adamant that this is just a piece of Forum folklore.
He says that in order for the range change mechanism to function correctly, the transfer box control module must be calibrated to the mechanical dimensions of the transfer box that it is connected to. It needs to know where the upper and lower movement limits are so the solenoid does not try and force the lever too far, and also to diagnose when it has not moved far enough.
That is the only calibration that can be done, he says, and is typically carried out when one of the transfer box electronic components is changed, like the solenoid. The clutches are mechanical, so nothing to calibrate. He says the Discovery transfer box is, in essence, just a manual box where the change lever is moved electrically.
Does anyone have a definitive statement on this transfer box recalibration issue and when it should be done? From what I have read, it seems to be tripped out as the initial action for all transfer box ills.

My D3 had a failed front diff, and when the transfer box needed recalibrated,it felt almost exactly like the failed diff felt.....a horrible graunching, accompanied by a wheel skipping.
It was so similar to the diff that it took me and 2 guys from my Indy a while to diagnose....we went back and forward numerous times, and couldn't decide whether the front had gone again,or it was the back this time.
Someone eventually suggested changing the transfer box oil,and recalibrating the box itself.......the symptoms were cured instantly,so I can assure you from personal experience,it's not "forum folklore"
I do agree that it is not a "cure-all" and will certainly not work in all instances of transfer box issues, but as I said in an earlier post,it's a cheap starting point before throwing big money at the problem "Better to remain silent and be thought a fool, than to speak out and remove all doubt" ?.....what rubbish...

I don't have an axe to grind here, just a tad confused and curious. Hence trying to determine what recalibration actually means and when it is/could be a valid action, such as following an oil change (which might have been the actual cure for your problem rather than the recalibration ).

...I can't remember what the oil change schedule says for the trf box,but my Indy reckoned the stuff that came out didn't look too bad (at 90k)....so I put it down to the recalibration, but you make a valid point .... Sorry I'm new to this site so bare with! My disco is vibrating from 30mph onwards and juddering sometimes. The judder is intermittent and only happens when the car is nearly at a stop once I've pressed the brakes. A bit like a car that's about to stall if you do not press the clutch. I should say I have a HSE auto TDV6.
The vibrating is very faint but I can feel it in the steering wheel. I have checked and rechecked the balancing and it's all good. All wishbone bushes and front tie rods have been changed. But the vibration is still there!
Could both the Judder and vibration be my diff or transfer box?
