Took it apart and took core out of solenoid sanded down and replaced result worse than before, try again but this time rubbed core with wire wool until very smooth, as soon as i replaced in solenoid centre felt it was going to work as it moved smoother than ever. true enough when light refitted dipped worked fine just hope it lasts! thanks for everyone's help on this one cheers

Classic case of "If at first you don't succeed, try try and try again". Glad to hear you sorted it

Both my headlights have started doing this at exactly the same time, which makes me think it probably isn't a sticky flap or solenoid - anyone any ideas please ?
But to test it I tried to get to the shutter flap but simply couldn't work out how to remove the casting that goes over (ie behind) the reflector.
I got the bulb out and the ballast off - couldn't get the small black box by the solenoid connector off; but I freed the reflector screws, but there's no way that the reflector would come out without removing that casing.
The photos earlier in this thread clearly show it has been removed.
Any help gratefully appreciated.

If both have done it at the same time I would look at the switch rather than the lights

Do you mean the switch on the stalk, or is there another one that just runs the solenoids ?

Seems I was wrong and it is just the o/s light - been replaced (at vast cost I might add) but being a stubborn old *** I want to get the old one working properly.
My lights have a solid metal (cast ?) cover over the reflector, and that stops me getting the reflector out. Anyone know how to remove that casting ?

just when you think all is well it starts sticking again. Have reworked it about 5 times, on last attempt swapped the solenoid coil with drivers side light but still no joy. Drivers side worked fine still. Can only guess the coil is holding a charge stopping the flap dropping back to dipped position as I have filled the lugs down and can't see it sticking/touching anything. I have left the solenoid disconnected so have no main beam on nearside but can use main beam now without blinding on coming traffic. Now looking for a cheap damaged light to use the solenoid from. If anyone has one let me know Richard

Has anyone tried this on an adaptive light, as my off side was sticking?
Had a look, looks pretty daunting in there
if so how hard was it to take the lamp apart You only get one lap, make it count !!

Will give this a try on mine.
Both lights are sticking so i no longer use the high beams, need to get out and thump the light to get it to return to normal.
I have adaptives as well. Should be interesting.

I had this, briefly.
Removed the solenoid and cleaned the metal shaft that slides in and out with some fine wire wool. I think it's important to clean along the length of the shaft rather than around the circumference of the shaft otherwise you risk scoring the metal and creating yet more friction that the solenoid has to overcome.
Cleaned it all up with a solvent and reassembled.
No problems since.
