I think that I am having a similar problem with my 2006SE auto. The temp gauge drops to zero quickly (after the engine is warm) and it seems that the auto box will not change so the engine revs increase. I can put it into manual mode and change the gears OK. After a moment or two the temperature gauge creeps back to normal and the car is fine. My wife has said that there has been a thump from the gearbox when the temperature drops but this hasn't happened with me. I called the AA but they weren't interested, just told me to take it to a dealer as 'the gearbox' has failed. That was a few months ago but the problem is now more regular. Are these the same symptoms as you were experiencing?

Check you have not got air in the water coolant system by bleeding the system, one bleed valve is on the top filler bottle, a black screw with a cross on it, the other is under the engine sound proofing cover at the front of the engine on the end of a short black pipe, again black with a cross on it.
Both water and oil sensors feed the temp gauge with info.It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

Thank you I will try that. Are the temperature sensors linked to the engine management system so that the gears wouldnt change?

The water sensor is linked to the engine management and the temp display. The gearbox oil temp is used by the gearbox controller. If the oil temp is too cold it holds onto gears and does not allow top gear to help everything warm up. If the oil is too hot it reduces or stops shifts to allow things to cool.Land Rover - Turning Drivers into Mechanics Since 1948

Hi Crabfat, did changing the oil temp sensor do the trick?

Took car to dealer. On second test drive it exhibited the falling temperature gauge but no fault codes were registered. Dealer replaced oil temp sensor and said that on two more test drives car responded normally and temperature gauge behaved. Collected car and on drive home found that there was significant throttle lag in auto. Changing manually everything works fine. In auto car is slow to pull away (as usual but worse) but then when the throttle is pushed to the floor nothing happens for about 3 to 5 seconds and then whoosh and car picks up. Could changing an oil sensor have affected throttle response in auto mode? It is almost like the throttle cable has snapped but it hasn't and only happens in auto mode. In manual mode the throttle response is fine. Any suggestions please?

It seems that one EGR valve had failed. Easily diagnosed by dealer and fixed within day. Could it be a coincidence that this happened just after oil sensor repalcement? Hope soi!

So do you think it was the EGR or the temp sensor?

I think that it was both. I am not a technician but I haven't heard of EGR failure showing up as a dropping temperature gauge so I think that the gauge issue was the oil sensor and then the EGR valve failed.

Mine was the temp gauge, changed it and all was good, but now I have an even bigger problem, it looks like my ECM has been fried
