Differential Help please

OK my car 06 D3 Se just covered 40000 and the front diff has packed in so getting it replaced next week at Strathern Engineering, great service by them.

Here is my question, I am going to check and change the rear diff oil? I know it is 1.1ltr off oil but why dont you fill it to the level of the side filler plug?

secondly will this oil do ?

http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/...yId_255219

Thanks for any help

The Halfords link is the incorrect viscosity (80W90)

You should use 75W/90, LR recommend Castrol SAF-XO

The capacity of 1.1 ltrs is correct, over filling would cause insufficent void space for expansion due to heat increase and potentially cause premature seal failure due to an increase in pressure
Never get mad - get even !!

06 D3 now gone to family member and still going strong at 265k

previous vehicles:
04 D2 TD5 - (clocked 189k from new)
52 X-Trail 2.2 SVE
various euro boxes !

Thanks

I guessed it was due to over pressure ok the oil you said sounds good but looks like it has been replaced with this stuff?

Is it fairly obvious when the front diff packs up? I have a stange vibration in one gear at 2000 rpm and hope its not related?

The crown wheel & pinion and bearings can be replaced on the rear, and the bearings can be replaced on the front. I prefer royal purple.

Transfer Case: Royal Purple Synchromax (part #01512, quart bottle) or Royal Purple Max ATF (part #01320, quart bottle);

Differentials: Royal Purple Max Gear 75W-90 (part #01300, quart bottle)

There are photos of the disassembled rear diff in my gallery.

Mine was really obvious on full lock at very slow speeds...the outer wheel would "skip"...sounds daft but if you can imagine a car without a diff...thats what it feels like.....
I didn't get a vibration....just a drone at constant speed, and an obvious whine when I lifted off the loud pedal
"Better to remain silent and be thought a fool, than to speak out and remove all doubt" ?.....what rubbish...

Locking rear E-diff
RLD spare wheel protector & sump guard
Extended roof rails
Series 111 mudflaps
Black side tubes,grill and vents
Timed climate remote
Hids4u interior lights

D4 Firenze my2012 HSE
D3 Java 2005 SE manual (sold, sadly, thanks for the memories)
1966 '88 Series 2a....still starts in the morning better than I do...
