Child Safety Locks - Ouch!!!
Hi Everyone,
I was after some advice regarding the child safety locks on my D3 05 plate - hope someone can help?
The plastic grommet in the rear driver’s side mechanism is broken and I'm unable to engage the safety lock on this side. I have been quoted ~£270.00 by the dealer (Hunters Guildford) to replace this mechanism which seems excessive. I understand that safety comes first, but considering that my current "B" service (today 21/12/2011) + extras (bulbs, brake fluid, drivers roll bar joint, steering track arms) is going to set me back ~£1,400.00 (not sure if this includes VAT) I am reluctant to spend another ~£300 for what appears to only be a piece of plastic!
So my questions are;
1) Is this the correct price for part + labour to fix the child lock mechanism?
2) Can I buy a second hand one and replace it myself?
3) If yes, would I need any specialised LR tools?
4) If no, are there any independent people/dealers that would be able to do this for cheaper?
Any advice greatly appreciated!
Thanks in advance,
Jon

Not sure about your first 3 questions but I would talk to Guava in Peasmarsh first , in my experience they are much better than Hunters and always gave me more confidence in what they were proposing.
If you want an Indy, Keith Gott in Alton, not too far from Guildford are good and I take my D3 there for everything since the warranty expired.

I haven't had a chance to take a picture yet, but will do at some point. Interestingly, when I collected my D3 yesterday (£1,124.00 lighter) I made some enquiries about the breakdown of costs for the dealer to replace the child lock mechanisim ... turns out that the part is only £69 and the rest is labour (1.5 hours) ... I think I will definitely try and save the £200 labour cost by doing it myself if possible. If I succeed, I plan to document and post a detailed "how to guide" for anyone else who has the same issue

Once the doors have auto locked you can't open the rears until the engine os off anyway, so depoending on the age of your little ones you might be happy to leave it as it is?? Only an option.....
