Blue smoke
Hi,
Just placed a Bell decat pipe, don't know if it would be part of the problem
Now, recently went offroading, and after cleaning the car completely,
I noticed when accelerating under load, that where the car departed, there hangs a bit of blue smoke
I only notice it when accelerating from a red light/stand still
Any idea what could be the problem?
the car has now approx 93 000 miles.... 150 000 kms
All info is welcome
Kind regards
Henry
PS, in the next 2 weeks I was going to let my garage change the timing belt on the front...
things he could change as well that could solve the problem?

no one has any ideas on where to begin the search for the problem?
same on mine HJ
same decat since one year and same blue smoke when accelerating from a stand still
not always and not often, just sometimes
IMO there's an oil leak inside the turbo 'cause blue smoke is a clear sign of oil burning
don't know whether this could be related to the decat or not
don't know if a bit lower counterpressure can affect the turbo. I don't think so but we should ask Pete
let me know

I have the same on my other D3 and know of another one exactly the same, it appears they don`t all like decat pipes. I will be putting the cat back on and all will be good As you say its intermittent.I can resist everything except TEMPTATION
Can Am Commander 1000XT
Seen the light and bought a 4Motion T5
I can't believe a so small drop in the exhaust counterpressure results in a leak of turbocharger gaskets (o-ring?)
i was thinking about rebuilding the turbo to get it clean and fully serviced before considering recatting
let us know the result of the recat

Will do a complete service in the next 2-3weeks
Complete change of fluids (oil/coolant/transmission/all filters oil-diesel/....)
WAS thinking about a sports exhaust, but should even make the problem bigger IF the decat could be part of the problem...
I'm glad I'm not alone, BUT I don't think I'm the only one asking himself WHY
This topic will be followed by some, and I will put all I do in this topic, and hope to find a solution
happened less to me too, probably due to the cold weather
i really don't know
let us know

Hi guys
blue smoke is a sign of oil being burnt. This can have various reasons, but in the case discussed here the most likely will be that the turbo is on its way out.
Turbo failure on the D3 is common and the main culprits are a blocked cat, (that is why we de-cat Landys ) or infrequent oil changes.
Removal of cat and blanking of EGR's cannot affect blue smoking! You will have to look for the cause somewhere else.
But turbo failure around 150'000km is most commonly associated with a blocked cat or a defective EGR valve. This is why it is such a good idea to blank them off A.S.A.P. EX AFRICA SEMPER ALIQUID NOVI

And some more serious stuff
as you know it's not possible to blank those ing EGRs on MY>07 as for mine
mine began smoking since decatting. That's why i thought decat was the reason of the smoke
decat is associated with a (small or relevant?) drop of exhaust counterpressure
probably this affects a bit EGRs recycling pressure and something else
my diagnosis was the same as your: an oil leak through turbo seals
some say that turbo needs to be revised around 100k km as a preventative measure and that's what i'd do
then if she stops smoking this was the cause

Hi filo
contact Pete from Bell Auto Services and send him your vin number. He can then advise, what can be done about the EGR blanking.

Sonic and fellow "de-cat" D3's any comment on living with the D3 after the change? My2008 D3 had blue smoke on 1 occasion before having turbo replaced because of seized vvain linkage, obvoiusly cat in place and at 25000miles it can't be the turbo, more likely just bad combustion due to turbo not working?A few mods... and keeping it all running...Faultmate MSV2
MY09EGR's blanked Thanks Bellautos, BAS

Hi D4JWW
here in up country SA we don't have the problem with seized VVT linkages. This seems to be a rust related problem.
There is however now a linkage available as a service items. Costs around £20.00. The problem is to change this item. The labour costs are quite staggering.
What we do however suffer from here are blocked VVT mechanism due to too much soot contamination in the turbo. For this decarbonising spray can be administered EX AFRICA SEMPER ALIQUID NOVI

Hi
I still have two cars both D3 manuals one with 76k miles and one with i think 120k miles on and both are fine. I know of many many companys UK and non UK who sell decat and full exhaust systems for the RRS and D3 2.7L and we have not heard of this problem from a decat or performance exhaust in the past.
The Exhaust Back Press on a good exhaust system fitted with the correct diamiter decat is still within a very resonable tollorance to when fitted with a cat.
2007 and onwards cars have more pre injection than pre 2007 cars and this may be contributing to the differences seen from car to car.
Pete
