Steering Wheel Vibration arising from Exhaust Resonance |
|
I have had an uncomfortable vibration thru the steering wheel in low gear with engine under load with my 11MY 2.7 D4.
At first it was thought [incorrectly] to be the oil filled engine mounts but has now been explained as "normal" and "by design" and is a consequence of the new [ D4] exhaust system which also acts as an extractor.
For comparison, I tried a 2.7 D4 with solid engine mounts which actually had visible steering wheel vibration - let alone a worse feel.
So, if your hands tingle after crawling in traffic or after a long trip on cruise control, you now know that it is "by design" and a feature.
And is not a warranty item according to LR HQ. +======

Not sure they are not telling porkies. It is easier than diagnosing properly.
Anyone else with a D4 notice it? “There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely gamesâ€

Just had a close look at "steering wheel wobble when braking " post.
The D4 has a lot of hidden differences to the D3 which require well tuned vibration dampers scattered around the vehicle, aside from the 2 big lumps of cast iron near/under the tail lights on the D3 the D4 has 5 kg damper in the steering wheel for instance and others in the engine bay apparently.
I was also told that the D4 front end is the same as the RRS and thus gives a harder feel that the D3.
The exhaust is definitely a different design and is finely tuned.
However the Australian version does not have the DPF and I don't know how this would affect exhaust gas flow entering the exhaust proper. [ standing waves, harmonics etc]
Try it, drive slowly on the flat towards a steep hill without accelerating.
A short way up the hill my steering wheel vibrates at high frequency [lke an elactric shaver] which can also be felt in the passenger seat and there is a sort of metal on metal grinding noise like the steering column is touching the firewall.
100 % reproducable and verified by the dealership. +======

Just picked up a 2.7 D4 loaner with 6k km while my v high fuel consumption is fixed.
It's vibration is identical but worse than my car.

This problem is wide spread and has been around for some time. +======

Mine vibrates when stationary and I have been told this is normal too but it has only started to do this in the last few months. So it can't be normal.
