What spares one need to take with him on long journeys. |

We are planning some overland journeys next year meanly driving off-road using rood books. I will probably be on my own, meaning one D4.
My main concern is what to take with me as spare parts. I use to go on expeditions with my Series 3 Land Rover; I went on 5 journeys to Tunisia, Algeria and Niger. I always went on my own and took spares to fix my Landy in the desert. With the D4 it is different, now I have kids traveling with me and the D4 have too much electronics, which I must say scare me a lot since I do not know any things on electronics.
From your traveling experience, what went wrong with your D3 or D4, and how did you fix it?
Any bit of info will be much appreciated…thanks

If you are getting tight on space/weight consider just taking one spare rim and tyre, plus a spare tyre
OK chances are you will be running on tubeless tyres. Consider two spare inner tubes. If you have difficulty in repairing a puncture they may get you another100-200 miles down the road. Tubes in tubeless tyres will abrade due to rougher tyre wall.
Small and lightweight, but possible tyre fix.
A good compressor, will cost a bit more then those in motorist shops
A tyre deflator such as an EZ tyre deflator, being able to deflate and inflate tyres reasonably quickly is a bonus.
Get a good tyre repair kit and bead breakers. A kit containing say sticky string/plugs as well as patches.
Tyres in good condition at the start helps, say less then 1/3 wear

Air filter
Both sizes of suspension tubing + push-fit connectors.
Get rid of the locking nuts, and don't rely on the supplied wheel brace. Long succession of Disco's since 2001...
SIII Lightweight - neglected & rusting. Bulkhead, A panels, vent panel & outriggers now disintegrated - Next years project!

TBH it's easier just to take two full wheel tyre combo's ...one underneath in the usual spot and one up on the roof. If you don't have space up top because of a roof tent or other weight issues then you can always remove the centre row of seats and pop it lying down in there and build a platform above it for other storage....or if you want to splash out then you could get either a single or double wheel carrier fitted at the rear. As has been said ..a decent breaker bar and an air jack would be ideal....a good tyre repair kit...tool kit.
As for other bits then a Faultmate \ Autologic would be an advantage ..probably Faultmate being the most affordable TBH ...learn how to use it BEFORE you go though. Dual battery and a decent fridge is a big advantage. Spare parts such as height sensors, air & fuel filters, fuses. A decent tow rope.
Be aware....Front drive shafts hate sand on full lock ...... Shocks & bushes... vehicle weight combined with extreme heat and corrugations kill them
Unless you are planning on tackling very arduous terrain the don't go mad with protection ... a sump guard and maybe a fuel tank guard at most is all that's required.
In terms of confidence ...then it's all about the prep ...having been on two trips with large groups to Morocco and being aware of many others on here going to North Africa.....I've yet to see a D3\4 not make it home 21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021

As you start thinking of your kit, consider What if
What if you break or lose a bit of kit will you be in serious trouble?
IF you lose your wheel brace have you got a back up socket to fit?
If your jack loses its oil/ sinks into the ground have you got another means of jacking vehicle?
Thinking of jacking vehicle a small folding axle stand with spreader board is a useful safety aid.
So remember what if (tempered with common sense )

Thank you all for the information you have posted. I think like myself a lot of D3 & D4 owners will find this very useful.
I have a hand book from Land Rover, “Working in the wild – Land Rover`s manual for Africa†I use to carry it with me whenever I went to the North Africa. It showed you everything, from how to pack in every empty space there is in a Defender to what items you can use in case of an emergency to repair the LR to get you home.
I wonder if Land Rover has one for the D3 / D4 too

I've taken both a D3 and D4 to the Tunisian desert, both returned without major incident.
I'm fairly sure we discussed a spares list on here, so search for Tunisia 2009 and 2010 that should get you the list.
As for tyres, I agree with above, take two full wheels if you can, it just makes life alot easier. Changing a wheel in the sun is hard enough work without have to strip the tyre off and refit it. We left that for the evening after sundown. A good compressor like Viair or a copy (I got one for about £85 a few years ago)

cos its a pain in the butt when the light comes on and you have to drive at a set speed and revs for a set time (see your handbook). Happened to one of the guys on our Pyrenees trip.
Before leaving give your motor a sound thrashing (decent speed, high revs) to regenerate the DPF before you start crawling off road.
Its also expensive if it then fails altogether. Dunno how you get rid of it though. Just thrash your motor every few weeks and you'll be fine Tony

tbh you can only carry so much,take the obvious things that are easy enough to fit,make sure you join a decent recovery company and get the best policy ie get you home rather than dump you at the nearest garage.

Seems a bit overkill for me, just for the Pyrenees. If you get your motor serviced before you go, do not see the need to carry exxess wieght. Maybe diferant for Africa.
We covered the Pyrenees, when we did 11 countrys in 9 days on the Landy Rally, we also went to Croatia the year before that, only carry fuses and bulbs, was fullyloaded with all camping gear, would have not had room for all that lot anyway. Did take a second spare wheel and tyre.
Also would have not had all the tools, to use some of that kit.

I agree with roamingman....but there are a few items on that list that one would have take with him. I think if you are traveling in Europe or any other place that have Land Rover Assistance and good mobile phone coverage to call them, you do not need to carry all that spares. Also keep in mind that to change some parts you need special tools to do the job and if I go with that list to my dealer he will probably tell he have nothing in stock.
I think one of the most useful and important think that is needed was left out by all ...I good internet connection to Disco3.co.uk ...because there are members here that can help you out more the Land Rover Assistance.
