Offroad driving for teenagers

I'd like to organise a day for my children to drive my D3 (or someone else's....) offroad in non-challenging terrain and fully supervised. They're 15 and 13, very sensible, tall, fit and agile.

An old airfield might be ideal.

Idea is to let them build up some driving skills, vehicle handling, etc (and have a day or two of fun).

Any suggestions as to where we might go? Anyone else done this?

If you find a place, post here - my two (also 15 and 13) would love a go Smile They've both driven round the sailing club car park a couple of times, but would like to do more. (Given all the outdoor stuff we do, I figure there may be an emergency situation where them knowing enough to make the car go could come in handy, such as if it's me that comes off the bike horribly rather than one of them!)

Croft circuit in North Yorkshire used to do introductory days for kids aged 13+ they would do a bit around the paddock and then do a couple of laps of the circuit BUT for insurance purposes they had to use one of Croft's cars (A mini Cooper) and I seem to remember it was about £100 for an hour Shocked Maybe see if you can find a karting circuit with a friendly owner.

Hi Dan

Yes, can do the BMW experience at Silverstone or Brands, same idea, but it £895 for 20 mins driving. Bonkers. I want to hire an airfield for a few £££ and have it for the day.

Might be a bit far North for you but I could look at hiring the off-road site at Tong for another forum event similar to ones I've run in the past. It's in West Yorkshire, just off the M62.

May be quite possible to mark out a novice track for supervised teenagers.

Yorkshire's OK, we can fit in a trip to Grandma in York ... she won't want to drive though. Might be up for that... Thumbs Up

Hmmmm interesting !
I think Private land with permission from the land owner would be best suited ?

It's a good idea that's for sure, especially if needed in an emergency situation !
I learnt to drive off road off road at an early age and apart from making me a more accomplished driver when I did start driving it helps with the confidence thing too

As mentioned if you find anywhere please post,
I initially thought green lane then realised the legality being treated as a road etc ?
Then tong or similar but they prob have an age limit ? Insurance ?

Good luck Thumbs Up

Has to be completely private and "off the public roads". Not necessary rough terrain, and airfield would be OK.

Green lanes are no good.

I'm working at Tong tomorrow as it's a public open 4x4 driving day, so will speak to the boss and see if it would be feasible.

Try contacting your local 4x4 club and see if they are planning any tyro trials.

Tyro trials are like RTV's but easier decided for novice driving. Age limit is 14 however.

Tyro trials are also used to allow other halves to drive offroad. The novice drivers are walked around the sections, and given hints on how to drive it and then they are supervised by an experienced driver around the section

Why not go and have a chat with a local farmer, if you and your sons go with you and explain what you want to do I'm sure you'd find one willing to let you drive around the perimeter of one of the fields. I have done this and the farmer was more than happy providing I didn't stray into the planted area (he left about 2.5m strip all the way round). I offered him some money and he declined saying it was nice to be asked rather than just trespassing!
